Oberlascheid is located in the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park, right on the Belgian border and at an elevation of about 530 metres above sea level. Its location in the nature park, its position on the border, and its elevation give the village a distinctive profile. Several hiking trails run through the municipality; the Bachpfad is particularly noteworthy.

Hiking and Navigation

The Bach-Pfad is an easy, 14.0-kilometre circular trail between Halenfeld and Bleialf. Its route follows the Alfbach, Donsbach, Ihrenbach, and Dürenbach streams and runs along the Belgian border in sections. The stream names help pinpoint the route more precisely; its length and circular format are additional practical features to consider when choosing a trail. The easy rating and the route length answer different questions: one describes the stated difficulty, while the other indicates the extent of the route.

Oberlascheid and Radscheid are located on district road 104. The municipality has three shelters and five benches for hikers. If you want to include one of these facilities as a fixed stop on your hike, check it on site before planning your stage around it. This lets you consider the route and breaks as separate planning points: the route details help you choose a trail, while the facilities may serve as possible rest stops.

Chapel and Local History

The Chapel of St. Stephen is a legally protected cultural monument. The nave and choir acquired their present form around 1848; older parts were probably incorporated at that time. This dating links a specific construction phase with the possibility of older building elements, without reducing the chapel’s origins to a single date.

A figure of St. Gangolph stands at the entrance, with a depiction of the Throne of Mercy above it. The veneration of St. Arnulfus once drew pilgrims to Oberlascheid and contributed to the village’s nickname, “Schwingslascheid.” Local tradition thus includes both specific images at the chapel and a historical pilgrimage tradition.

Oberlascheid was first mentioned in a document in 1187; its name at the time was “langescheit.” A later building also reflects the village’s history: the former schoolhouse with a teacher’s residence at Ortsstraße 14 dates from 1887 and is now a private home.

Local traditions include Burgbrennen, when a large fire is lit on the first Sunday after Carnival. Dates and public arrangements may vary. If you are planning a visit around the event, check the specific details in advance.
