Orsfeld: St. Peter and Historic Wayside Crosses
Accommodation in Orsfeld
Orsfeld has a clear cultural and historical focus: the branch church of St. Peter is a local attraction, joined by several niche and wayside crosses of different forms and dates. A mountain bike route also passes along roads in the village.
St. Peter: Reading the Building History in Its Individual Parts
The Catholic branch church of St. Peter is an attraction in Orsfeld. It is a hall church dating from 1781; its west tower is probably medieval. The tower is the oldest surviving part of the present-day church. It comes from the medieval Orsfeld chapel and is its only surviving remnant.
The sacrament niche also points to a different period: a late Gothic niche bearing the year 1487 is set into the northeast wall of the choir apse. The two dates refer to different parts of the building. 1781 marks the hall church, while 1487 appears on the sacrament niche. This makes it possible to place the building’s history in context through specific features rather than a single date.
St. Peter offers a particular focus when choosing where to visit: the information brings together an 18th-century hall church, a probably medieval tower, and a late Gothic detail. If historic architecture interests you during your stay, you can use these building styles and dates as a guide when looking for a hotel in Orsfeld.
Niche and Wayside Crosses in Orsfeld
One niche cross in Orsfeld is unadorned and has a narrow, chamfered shaft. The cross finial sits directly on the niche roof, without a stem. Its date is uncertain: it probably comes from the 16th or early 17th century. Another niche cross is precisely located on the road to Seinsfeld: it lies about 150 metres south of the junction with the Kyllburg–Oberkail road.
The old court cross, a late Gothic niche cross probably dating from 1415, stands by the Orsfeld water hut. Its period is therefore different from that of the unadorned niche cross. On a wayside cross at Kyllburger Straße 2, a stonemason’s mark below the inscription identifies the shaft as belonging to the group of Kyllburg crosses from the early 17th century.
The shaft of the wayside cross at Kyllburger Straße 2 leans against a farm building’s barn; the upper part of the cross is missing. The cross details therefore have different points of interest: the probable date of the court cross, the shape of the niche cross, and the stonemason’s mark on the shaft at Kyllburger Straße. By contrast, the location of the cross on the road to Seinsfeld is described by its distance from and position relative to the junction.
