Plütscheid: Hiking Trails, Forest and Staudenhof
Accommodation in Plütscheid
Plütscheid offers three hiking trails with different highlights: easy circular hikes with manageable walking times, a wooded ridge and the history of the abandoned village of Staudenhof. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer a circular hike, a walk through woodland or learning more about the historic community.
Hiking trails for different time budgets
Nature Park South Eifel Hiking Trail No. 19 is an easy circular hike starting in Plütscheid. The route is 7.6 kilometres long and takes around 2 hours 15 minutes. Along the way, you can enjoy views across the Eifel heights and into the Prümtal valley. Nature Park South Eifel Hiking Trail No. 20 also begins and ends in Plütscheid. This easy circular hike is 8.5 kilometres long and takes around 2 hours 20 minutes. It is therefore slightly longer than No. 19; the stated walking time is only marginally longer, too.
No. 20 crosses a wooded ridge shaped over millennia by the Ehlenzbach and Kleiner Ehlenzbach streams. Near the end of the route, a 530-metre-high hill offers panoramic views. The two circular hikes therefore differ not only in length and duration, but also in the landscapes described: No. 19 focuses on the views across the heights and into the Prümtal valley, while No. 20 features the wooded ridge and the viewpoint near the finish.
Forest route and the history of Staudenhof
Nature Park South Eifel Hiking Trail No. 21 passes through the Geweberwald forest, with its beech, oak and spruce trees, and by the abandoned village of Staudenhof. From there, the route follows narrow paths along the Prüm towards Mauelermühle before climbing back towards Plütscheid. The trail thus combines woodland stretches with a section along the river and the historic village.
In the 19th century, Staudenhof was considered Germany’s smallest municipality. Its municipal area covered 18 hectares; around 1821, it had about 128 residents. At this remote site, the old school is said to be the only house still fit to live in. These details give a stop at the former village its own historical significance, before the trail continues along the Prüm and back towards Plütscheid.
Getting there and practical information
Plütscheid is considered a place without a direct rail connection; Bitburg-Erdorf is considered the nearest railway station. If travelling by train, check the current connections. Hiking parking areas are in the town centre near Hauptstraße 2, between Gasthaus Geimer and the parish church. As parking regulations and local access may change, it is advisable to check these before travelling.
It is also worth checking the latest conditions before setting out on the hikes: route distances and approximate walking times help with planning, but do not replace checking trail conditions and access. Comparing the two circular hikes in particular makes it easier to decide if you are estimating how much time you have available for hiking.
More things to explore in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm
The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offers additional cultural and educational attractions. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex concepts in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed across three accessible levels of a bunker and features a military history exhibition in underground corridors and rooms.
In Rittersdorf stands a water castle dating back around 700 years, which has remained almost unchanged since it was built. It offers an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. These regional attractions offer a different focus from Plütscheid’s hiking trails and the history of Staudenhof.
