Rodershausen is located in the Southern Eifel Nature Park. Gently rolling hills and forests characterize the surrounding area, and trails through the countryside offer scenic views. If you are planning a stay, you can get to know the area through both its natural environment and its architectural and religious history.

Hills, Forests, and Hiking Routes

The hills and forests provide a setting for hikes and nature outings. There are numerous hiking trails through the natural landscapes of the Southern Eifel in the surrounding area. The countryside is also suited to leisurely walks, while routes through the Southern Eifel Nature Park offer views of the landscape. This makes it easy to include both nature experiences and quieter walks in your travel plans.

The Rodershausen planning area is located on the Karlshausen plateau. This rolling plateau lies above 500 meters and is part of the Western Eifel. The Our Valley Special Area of Conservation (6003-301) borders the planning area to the northwest; its wooded valley slopes characterize the landscape. These details describe the area at different scales: from the gentle hills and forests around Rodershausen to the wooded slopes of the Our Valley.

Circular Route No. 35, “Gemünd-Dauwelshausen,” runs along the Rodershausen planning area. It is listed on the 2020 Nature Park adventure map. Check the current map before setting out so your plans match the latest map edition.

Wayside Shrines, Crosses, and Church

Two wayside shrines in Rodershausen are dated 1879 and 1907 and feature depictions of the Pietà. The wayside shrine on the main road dates from 1907. Its gabled niche structure contains a Pietà that was probably mass-produced. The second shrine is northwest of Rodershausen, on the road to Dauwelshausen. Its design resembles a Station of the Cross; inside is a nearly fully sculpted Pietà from 1879. The two monuments offer different examples of the design of these places of devotion.

A round-arched wayside chapel dating from 1910 is another local landmark. The cemetery contains a Baroque shaft cross from 1705 and a finial cross from 1688. There is also a shaft cross on Sülmer Straße, known as the Schneiderskreuz. The dates therefore span the period from the 17th century to the early 20th century.

The Catholic parish church of St. James is a hall church with a Neo-Gothic character, built in 1898 and attributed to the architect Knepper of Diekirch, Luxembourg. Together with the wayside shrines, crosses, and wayside chapel, it offers an insight into the different forms of religious architecture and visual art in Rodershausen.
