Seiwerath offers a range of historical points of interest: religious buildings, a dated wayside cross, archaeological traces and a traditional custom. If you are looking for a hotel in Seiwerath, consider whether architectural history, Roman archaeological sites or a hike should be the focus of your stay.

Setting and landscape

Seiwerath lies in the Prüm Limestone Basin in the Eastern Eifel. The southern part of the municipality is situated on the Lascheid Plateau in the Western Eifel. The two landscape names refer to different areas: the Prüm Limestone Basin for Seiwerath and the Lascheid Plateau for the southern part of the municipality.

Churches, chapels and wayside cross

The Catholic chapel church of St. Wendelin and St. Lambertus is a small hall church with a medieval core and a pointed roof turret. Another dated architectural feature is the wayside cross near Hauptstraße 30: it is a Late Baroque shaft cross of the so-called Seffern type, dated 1790. The church’s medieval core and the year on the cross represent different periods in the history of the buildings.

In the nearby locality of Seiwerath-Dürrbach stands a chapel described as a three-bay hall church with a pointed roof turret, dating from 1892–93. The Brother Klaus Chapel has its own founding story: it was built thanks to a donation from Pastor Wallesch, who came from Dürrbach. Features dating from the time of construction include two door panels, the tiled floor, the altar and the Stations of the Cross panels. The building’s design, its founding and its furnishings each offer a different perspective on its architectural history.

Roman traces and Burgberg

Archaeological finds also provide historical clues. Roman cremation graves were discovered south of Dürrbach and southeast of Seiwerath in 1925. A Roman settlement site on Kirchberg, east-southeast of Seiwerath, was excavated in 1838, 1840 and 1842. The dates refer to different events: the discovery of the graves on the one hand and the excavations at the settlement site on the other.

Above the Dürrbach valley, east of Seiwerath, lies Burgberg (2). The small promontory fortification is situated on a narrow spur of land; a double rampart once enclosed an area of around 750 m². This is a different type of historical trace from the Roman sites: here, the location on the spur, the rampart and the approximate size of the enclosed area provide specific clues.

Tradition, event and hike planning

An old Easter water custom is associated with the Hertha spring. According to tradition, girls from Seiwerath once drew Easter water there. During the Schönecken Egg Race, the runner runs to neighbouring Seiwerath and back. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the latest dates.

For planning hikes, the “Wide Views and Deep Valleys” route, at 12 km long, provides a specific distance. If you plan to take this route, check the current route and conditions before setting out. This keeps the route length and up-to-date hiking information as separate planning considerations.
