Accommodation in Wißmannsdorf
Wißmannsdorf lies northwest of Bitburg on the middle reaches of the Prüm. The village is set in the green, rolling landscape of the Eifel. Two different hiking options are available for a stay: the 16.7-kilometer, moderately difficult Nature Park Southern Eifel Circular Trail No. 22 and the short Kleine Prümschleife loop around Wißmannsdorf. Historic crosses, ecclesiastical buildings, and Hamm Castle are additional themes to explore during your stay.
Hiking around Wißmannsdorf
The Nature Park Southern Eifel Circular Trail No. 22 starts and ends at Place Montaigut on Wißmannsdorf’s main street. The 16.7-kilometer route is rated moderately difficult, making it a longer hike. It passes through the Echtersbach Valley and the Hammer Büsch hillside forest. Near Biersdorf am See, it runs parallel for several kilometers to the Bitburger Brewery Nordic Walking Route. Check the route information before setting out.
The Kleine Prümschleife offers a short circular route around Wißmannsdorf. It follows sections of the Prüm, passes through a small village forest, and offers views across the Bitburger Gutland. The main difference between the two options is their length: a short loop around the village versus a 16.7-kilometer, moderately difficult hike. You should also check the route information before setting out on the Prümschleife.
The Prüm is a tributary of the Sauer and flows into the nearby Bitburg Reservoir. Wißmannsdorf also has picturesque routes for cyclists. Together with the circular trails, the landscape offers different ways to get around on foot or by bike.
Churches, crosses, and craftsmanship
Local history includes the Catholic parish church of St. Martin and St. Rosa, chapels in the districts of Hermesdorf and Koosbüsch, and wayside crosses from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The Lasch Cross dates from 1579 and is considered the most elaborately crafted wayside cross in the Trier district. Wißmannsdorf also had a sandstone-working tradition spanning more than 400 years; it ended in the mid-1950s. The church, chapels, and crosses reflect the religious side of the village’s history, while sandstone working recalls a long-practiced craft.
Hamm Castle
Hamm Castle is a late-medieval fortification dating from the 14th century. It predates the centuries in which the aforementioned wayside crosses were created, adding another historical period to explore. The Nature Park Southern Eifel Circular Trail No. 22 offers panoramic views of the castle. Visits are possible on request; confirm your visit before traveling. The views from the trail and a possible visit are two different ways to experience the castle.
