Wolsfeld lies in the Nims Valley, in a wooded setting and within the South Eifel Nature Park. The village is home to several historically significant buildings; two themed trails offer further perspectives on architecture and monuments. This gives you two ways to plan your trip: you can focus on architectural history and individual buildings, or compare the different themed trails.

Churches and Architectural History

The Old St. Hubertus Church has been a pilgrimage church since the 15th century. It features a Romanesque choir tower and a two-aisled hall dating from around 1500. Inside is a polychrome stone altar from the late Renaissance, dated 1620 and attributed to the circle of Trier sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann. The combination of these architectural styles brings together several historical layers: from the Romanesque tower to the hall dating from around 1500 and the 17th-century Renaissance altar.

The New St. Hubertus Church offers a different architectural accent. The hall church, built in 1926, is designed in post-classical forms. The two churches therefore differ in both their construction dates and their architectural styles.

Castle, Historic Village Center and Monuments

Wolsfeld Castle, also known as the Burg, is a 17th-century manor house built for the Lords of Enschringen. The year 1664 is inscribed on the door lintel. In the Wolsfelderberg area, the Hubertus Fountain and Hubertus Cross date from 1691. These dates provide concrete reference points if you would like to place the local architectural history in its historical context.

The development of the historic village center is also part of Wolsfeld’s story: more than 50 village renewal projects were carried out, primarily around Wolsfeld Castle. Several buildings received the Baukultur EIFEL award. Information about the renewal of the village center therefore complements the story of individual historic buildings.

Comparing the Two Themed Trails

The Bitburger LandGang Monument Tour is classified as easy. It is 4.3 kilometers long, takes about an hour, and starts and ends at the church parking lot in Wolsfeld. The tour offers a view towards Wolsfelderberg. A visitor tip also draws attention to the production of Eifel spirits and liqueurs. Alongside the buildings, the tour thus highlights these regional products.

The Monument Tour is considered suitable for families. Wolsfeld also has a playground and a meadow with llamas and alpacas. Check the current status of these facilities before your visit, as visitor amenities may change.

The Baukultur EIFEL themed trail is also classified as easy. It is 487 meters long and runs from EuropastraĂźe by the church to Holsthumer StraĂźe in Wolsfeld. Compared with the 4.3-kilometer Monument Tour, it is considerably shorter; it also ends at a different point from where it starts. The trails therefore differ both in their stated lengths and in their endpoints. Route information may be updated; check the length and route before setting out.
