Bellheim – Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Bellheim
If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Bellheim, local highlights can help you decide what you’d like your trip to focus on: routes through the landscape, cultural events or historic sites. Bellheim brings together individual places to visit, a circular hike and recurring festival traditions. The following points of interest showcase different sides of the town and help you match your interests with your destination.
Woodland and trails around Bellheim
At the edge of the forest, near the SchĂĽtzenhaus at the end of ForststraĂźe, is the adventure playground. Its facilities include a water play area, logs for climbing and balancing, swings, climbing towers, a zip line and a forest discovery trail. This brings together a range of play and activity features. There is also an herb trail on the grounds of the Old MittelmĂĽhle Sawmill.
If you’d like to include a longer route in your plans, consider the Queichwiesen Loop: this circular hike is about five kilometres long and starts and ends at the Schützenhaus Bellheim. Along the way, it passes the adventure playground, the war memorial, the Spiegelbach stream, Knittelsheim Mill and the remains of a former Second World War ammunition railway. Its length and shared start and finish point give you an idea of the route’s scope; its waypoints add a variety of landscape and historical highlights. Check local route conditions before setting out.
Another named visitor attraction is the Elwetritschen observation platform in the forest north of Bellheim. It differs in character from the circular hike and the herb trail on the MittelmĂĽhle grounds.
Culture, events and local history
The “Alter Kindergarten” cultural centre provides the cultural association with space for changing exhibitions, smaller concerts, readings and talks. The “Open Stage,” featuring music, cabaret and poetry slams, is also held there regularly. If a particular date is important for your stay, check the current programme in advance. These formats give an overview of the different cultural events held at the venue.
Festival traditions also provide seasonal highlights. The Bellheim Garden Days are traditionally held at Whitsun in Spiegelbach Park. On the eve of the Bellemer Kerwe, the Bockbierfest takes place every year on the second weekend in October, when a distinguished Bellheim resident is named Bellheim Lord. During Advent, Spiegelbach Park provides the setting for the St Nicholas Market. The references to Whitsun, the October weekend and Advent show the different times of year these events take place; check specific event dates if you’re planning your trip around them.
At the deserted settlement of Friedrichsbühl, remains of a former Electoral Palatinate hunting lodge have been preserved. The lodge was built in 1550 and destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. The town’s history therefore extends beyond its present-day event venues to include a building with a known historical function and date.
More highlights in the Germersheim destination
The wider Germersheim destination also features regional mill and landscape highlights. The Queich Mills Circular Trail around Bellheim connects four of the six surviving mills and brings the region’s historic milling heritage to life. The Queich meadows form a still-active meadow irrigation system covering around 350 hectares. It stretches from Landau, Offenbach, Hochstadt, Ottersheim, Knittelsheim, Bellheim and Zeiskam to Germersheim.
The Germersheim Fortress offers another historical perspective: it is considered the largest Bavarian fortress outside Bavaria, and numerous important surviving buildings enclose the entire town centre. For a different kind of circular route, the wider Germersheim destination offers the Winden Stork Trail. This four-kilometre loop has 15 information boards about the white stork, local history, flora and fauna. From February to August, storks can be observed there in their nests, foraging and in flight; sightings are not guaranteed.
