Freisbach lies in the Gäu Plain, also known as the Palatinate Gäu. The Modenbach stream runs from west to east north of the built-up area. The town’s historical landmarks include the Protestant parish church and a former Electoral Palatinate forester’s and hunting lodge.

Local History and Architecture

Freisbach’s earliest roots are believed to date back to around the sixth century. The town was first documented as Frispach in 1179 in the Codex of Abbot Edelin of Weißenburg. The presumed beginnings and the first documented mention refer to different points in time: the first places the town’s early roots, while the second gives a specific year.

The present-day Protestant parish church was built in the Rococo style in 1754. The west portal is all that remains of the earlier Gothic church. The present building thus combines an older architectural feature with its 18th-century design.

The church’s paintings were created by Landau painter Georg Menges in 1754, the year it was built. The ceiling paintings depict the Holy Trinity at the center and the Evangelists in the four corners. The organ is also part of the historic furnishings: it has 25 stops and was installed by organ builder Johann Geib in 1789. It is still in working order; confirm its condition before visiting.

The walled forecourt was once a cemetery. Together with the church and the old schoolhouse, it forms an architectural ensemble. The forecourt thus adds the site’s former purpose and its connection to the neighboring buildings to the church’s history.

Another historic building is at Hintergasse 11. It was probably built in 1557 as an Electoral Palatinate forester’s and hunting lodge. The barn belonging to the former house dates from the 17th century; the year 1683 is carved into its gate beam. The presumed construction date of the house and the year on the barn gate therefore refer to different parts of the complex.

Landscape and Regional Routes

The Southern Palatinate has 500 kilometers of flat, signposted cycling routes. In the Palatinate Rhine Plain, these include the Rhine Cycle Route and the Kraut-und-Rüben Cycle Route. The landscape also features riparian forests, gravel pits and old branches of the Rhine. Check the specific route information before setting out on a cycling tour.

Marked hiking trails are another regional offering, including routes in the Bienwald, the Bellheim Forest and the Rhine meadows. One of the featured destinations is the Treidlerweg premium hiking trail. The Queich meadows can be explored on the Queich Meadows Circular Hiking Trail; their traditional irrigation system is recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
