Neuburg on the Rhine combines Lake Epple with a signposted village walking trail and a Rhine ferry to Neuburgweier. This brings together several different highlights: time by the water, a trail through local history and landscape, and a connection between the two banks of the Rhine. Museum exhibits offer further insight into fishing, shipping and life along the river.

Lake, Festival and Village Walking Trail

Lake Epple lies at the westernmost point of Neuburg on the Rhine. Its features include a large sunbathing lawn and a long sandy beach; admission is free. The lake also offers beach volleyball and other sports facilities. Check local information before your visit, especially if you have a particular activity in mind; details about the facilities may change.

The Epplesee Festival takes place every three years at Lake Epple. The festival features live music by various bands, a children's programme with creative activities and face painting, a festival service followed by a Sunday brunch, and attractions on and around the lake. Individual programme items may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates.

The signposted village walking trail is about 6.5 km long and passes eight stops with information boards. Its themes range from history and everyday life to the landscape; the route runs from the village centre to the Rhine meadows. The trail therefore offers a different focus from the lake: it passes through a range of themes and landscapes rather than concentrating your visit on the waterfront.

Rhine Crossing and Local History

The “Baden-Pfalz” Rhine ferry connects Neuburg directly with Neuburgweier on the Baden side of the Rhine. Water levels and weather can affect the ferry service; check the operator's information before travelling. A ferry connection from Neuburg on the left bank of the Rhine to Neuburgweier on the opposite bank has been documented since 1724. The ferry is therefore both a practical consideration for trip planning and part of the village's history.

The Rheinaue Museum opened in 1983. It provides information about life on the Rhine, fishing and the history of shipping. Exhibits include Neuburg traditional costumes, historical tools from local trades and maps showing the course of the Rhine and Neuburg's location in different centuries. Everyday life and work are represented alongside maps that show the village in relation to the river across several centuries.

Rhine Meadows and the Regional Landscape

In the vicinity of Neuburg are extensive, richly varied reed beds along the old Rhine channels of the Wörther Altrhein and the Kleine and Große Altwasser. They are of national importance as breeding, resting and wintering grounds for birds, particularly species that inhabit reed beds. These habitats are therefore important during several different phases of the year. This landscape is quite different from the lake: the focus here is on the old Rhine channels and their birdlife.

In the wider Germersheim travel region, the 44.4 km Bienwald-Rheinauen cycle route passes through the Bienwald forest and the Rhine meadows near Hagenbach and Neuburg on the Rhine, in the southern Palatinate close to the French border. It is a regional cycling option with its own route and distance. Conditions may change seasonally; check the route's condition before setting out.
