Eulenbis: Owl’s Head Tower, Hiking Trails and Beerewei(n) Museum
Accommodation in Eulenbis
Eulenbis and Owl’s Head
Owl’s Head helps you get your bearings in Eulenbis: At 422 metres above sea level, it is the highest elevation in the Weilerbach collective municipality. The Owl’s Head Tower stands on Owl’s Head above the village; from there, panoramic views extend across the Kaiserslautern region. There is a car park at the tower at Eulenkopfstraße 2, 67685 Eulenbis.
Hiking trails with different features
The Eulenkopfverein maintains six signposted hiking routes. One is the 14.5-kilometre circular hike “Attempts at Ore Mining at Owl’s Head,” which passes through Eulenbis and Erzenhausen. It runs through the Eulenkopf nature conservation area and includes shady forest paths as well as scenic high-altitude trails. At the old Roman road near Eulenbis, the circular route offers impressive views. Its name puts ore mining at the centre of the theme and connects it with the described landscape experience of forests, heights and views.
Other trails can be identified by their own points of reference: The GeoTour Eulenkopf starts right at Owl’s Head in Eulenbis. The Teufelstour is a premium trail bearing the German Hiking Seal and passes through Eulenbis. The Pfälzerwaldverein’s Blue Cross route runs from Kaiserslautern to Wolfstein; hiking boards showing its route are located at prominent points in Eulenbis and Erzenhausen. The trails therefore differ in several ways: the stated length of the circular route, the GeoTour’s starting point, the Teufelstour’s award and the Blue Cross route. The hiking boards at prominent points in Eulenbis and Erzenhausen also help you find your way along the respective trails.
The tower and the Beerewei(n) Museum
The Owl’s Head Tower is also a special venue for weddings: it houses the highest wedding room in the Palatinate. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Agree on your visit in advance, as details of the arrangements may change.
The Beerewei(n) Museum in Eulenbis is devoted specifically to the production of Beerewei(n). You can sample Beerewei(n) at a tasting offered there. If a tasting is important for your visit, check in advance whether one will be offered on your preferred date. The tower and museum therefore have different focuses: the tower offers views and a wedding room, while the museum focuses on its specific subject and the possibility of a tasting.
Another natural area in the Kaiserslautern travel destination
The broader Kaiserslautern travel destination also includes the Mehlinger Heide, regarded as the largest heathland area in southern Germany. It has an approximately 1.5-kilometre heathland discovery trail with information boards and stations; the heath is also connected to the Palatinate Forest hiking trail network. In terms of distance, this trail is considerably shorter than the 14.5-kilometre circular hike at Owl’s Head. These two lengths provide a concrete point of reference when weighing up different hikes for your stay. Check the trail details locally before travelling.
