Heiligenmoschel – Reiserberg and Planet Trail
Accommodation in Heiligenmoschel
Heiligenmoschel lies at the foot of the 459.7 m-high Reiserberg in the North Palatine Uplands. The Planet Trail begins in the village, and the challenging North Palatine Highland Cycling Route also passes through Heiligenmoschel. This gives you a choice of two different ways to explore the landscape: a themed walking route and a cycling loop.
Planet Trail and Sundial
The well-marked Planet Trail begins in Heiligenmoschel and leads to the Reiserberg in Schallodenbach. The route to the sundial is 7.3 km long. The walkable sundial is located on the Reiserberg between Heiligenmoschel, Schneckenhausen, Schallodenbach and Niederkirchen; its obelisks are made of local sandstone. The trail depicts the solar system at a scale of 1:1.4 billion. The planets closest to Earth are positioned along the trail at corresponding intervals. In this way, the scale becomes part of the trail’s theme.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
To reach the Planet Trail, take Deutsche Bahn to Lampertsmühle-Otterbach station, then bus 130 to Heiligenmoschel. Check the timetable before setting off. The District of Kaiserslautern is a member of the Rhine-Neckar Transport Association (VRN); the VRN website has timetable and fare information.
The designated parking area for the Planet Trail is on Bergstraße in 67699 Heiligenmoschel. Check the parking situation before your visit.
Cycling Route and Boundary Marker
The North Palatine Highland Cycling Route is a challenging 65.5 km circular route. It passes over Heiligenmoschel Berg and through Heiligenmoschel along the Römerstraße. Unlike the Planet Trail, whose distance is given to a named destination, this is a longer loop. The two routes therefore offer different formats for planning your day.
The Hinkelstein menhir is located near the destination. It marks the municipal boundaries of Otterberg, Höringen and Heiligenmoschel and is therefore known as a three-way boundary marker.
More Nature and Cultural Destinations in the Wider Kaiserslautern Destination
Other nature destinations in the wider Kaiserslautern destination include the Mehlinger Heide, considered the largest heathland in southern Germany. Its approximately 1.5-kilometre-long heathland trail features information boards and stations and connects to the Palatinate Forest hiking trail network. Guided tours are available. Check trail details on site before setting out.
Otterberg offers a cultural highlight: its abbey church dates from the 12th century, is one of the Palatinate’s most significant buildings, and is described as a monumental masterpiece of early Gothic architecture. The Lautertal also invites visitors to enjoy extended walks. The Karlstalschlucht walking trail passes through shady woodland, alongside gently flowing water and along narrow paths that climb and descend.
Nanstein Castle towers above Landstuhl, a landmark of the town of Sickingen, with sweeping views across the West Palatinate.
