Katzweiler offers open-air theater, village history and a range of trails as different starting points for planning your stay. Whether you are interested in a performance, want to see historic milling equipment or plan to spend some time outdoors, each local offering has its own character. When looking for a hotel in Katzweiler, it can therefore help to first choose the themes and dates you want to shape your stay.

Open-air performances and village history

The Katzweiler Open-Air Theater is located on the outskirts of town in a small valley, the Eselsdelle. Its stage is nestled between two wooded slopes. The program includes children's theater, musicals, plays and boulevard comedies; individual productions change seasonally. If you would like to attend a performance, check the schedule and dates for your travel period.

The village mill offers another glimpse of local history. It dates from 1756 and has an 8.40-meter overshot waterwheel. The village mill wheel in the town center is considered the largest mill wheel in southwestern Germany. The mill is no longer in operation. A visit lets you take in the historic architecture and the scale of the wheel without planning to see the mill in operation.

The old weigh house on the village square in Waagstraße also has a practical role in the town: it is now used by the tourism association and the open-air theater. The open-air theater's advance ticket sales also take place there. If you are planning a theater evening, you can include a visit to the village center and information about ticket sales in your plans.

Circular trails, ponds and outdoor activities

The Mill Hiking Trail starts at the village square in Katzweiler and leads to the village mill after about 100 meters. From there, you can take a detour to the landscape pond. The pond lies between the Lauter River and the railway line, covers about 4,000 square meters and is surrounded by a path with benches. As trail conditions can change, check the condition of the Mill Hiking Trail before setting out.

There is also a Kneipp pool right by the landscape pond, used especially by hikers and cyclists during the summer months. A 2,000-square-meter playground is located at the same site. As its facilities may change, it is a good idea to check their current condition before visiting. The combination of pond, circular trail and playground offers different reasons to include this spot in your day’s plans.

For a longer walk, Katzweiler has an accessible experience trail, inaugurated in 2012. It passes sights and places to stop for refreshments and can be walked as a 3-kilometer or 6.7-kilometer loop. The two lengths offer a clear choice in terms of how far to walk. The Himmelstour, established in mid-2019, is another loop option at around 9 kilometers: it leads from Katzweiler via Himmelsblick, Engelsberg and Himmelreich back to the starting point.

There are also designated options for Nordic walking: three routes are marked in Katzweiler. The Nordic walking course includes more than 20 kilometers of signposted trails on forest and field paths. The circular routes and the course therefore differ both in their stated distances and in their focus.

More activities in the area

The Bonanza Ranch in Katzweiler offers wagon rides, riding lessons for beginners and advanced riders, rides through the countryside and pony rides. If you would like to include one of these activities in your stay, check availability in advance. The Bonanza Ranch Reiterstube is a restaurant with a beer garden; you should also check opening times and access information before visiting.

If a performance is the main focus, the changing program and suitable dates are important. For a stay focused on outdoor activities, you can compare the two lengths of the experience trail, the approximately 9-kilometer Himmelstour or the designated Nordic walking routes. This lets you tailor your travel plans to the local activities that actually interest you.
