Castles, history and an award-winning hiking trail

Lichtenberg Castle gives a trip to Kusel a distinctive historical focus. At 425 metres long, it is one of Germany’s longest castle ruins and the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. Inside are the Palatinate Music Museum and the Geoskop. The Veldenz Hiking Trail also begins at the castle, above Thallichtenberg; it ends in the town of Lauterecken, known as the Veldenzstadt.

The Veldenz Hiking Trail is a certified quality trail with the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” award and a length of around 60 kilometres. It passes through two nature reserves and can be divided into five stages. The approximate total distance and number of stages provide a practical framework for planning. Those interested in the castle can also use the same starting point to access a multi-stage hiking route.

The water castle at Reipoltskirchen has a different architectural character. It stands on an artificial hill surrounded by a circular wall. Former residential buildings line the wall, and a wide, water-filled moat surrounds the castle. It was probably built in the 12th century and is one of the most impressive castle complexes in the Palatinate Uplands. The interplay of the hill, circular wall, former residential buildings and moat defines the site.

The Kusel Town and Local History Museum also offers a personal perspective on cultural history: the Fritz Wunderlich Room is dedicated to the famous tenor and native son of the town. Alongside the castles and their architecture, it brings a specific person and his connection to Kusel into focus.

Industrial history underground

The limestone mine on Königsberg in Wolfstein is an important industrial heritage site, located 50 metres underground. Guided visitor groups travel by mine railway through a long, winding tunnel with brick-lined vaults and passages cut into the rock. The underground experience brings the mine’s structure to life, as well as the work carried out in its tunnels.

There is also a wine tour among bizarre rock formations, featuring fine wines and information about wine, grape varieties and the hard work of miners underground. Knowledge about wine, different grape varieties and the history of work in the mine come together here. The options differ considerably for planning a trip: the Veldenz Hiking Trail is divided into five stages, while guided visitor groups ride the mine railway through the limestone mine.

Getting your bearings in Lauterecken

Lauterecken station is an important hub in the tourist infrastructure of Kusel district. It has a bus and train stop. The Glan-Blies Cycle Route, quality hiking trails and the draisine railway with accessible tourist services all run alongside the station. This makes it a named point of orientation where public transport and various tourist routes meet.

The signal box at Lauterecken station serves as a tourist information point and is an important contact point for visitors to the region. It has seasonal opening hours; check them before your arrival.

The wider region: Rhineland-Palatinate

The wider destination of Rhineland-Palatinate also includes Trier and its Roman history. The city was first a Roman colony, later an important trading centre and, at the end of the 3rd century, one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy; at the time, it was known as the “second Rome”. North of the Alps, Trier preserves an exceptional concentration of significant Roman buildings and traces of Roman settlement. The Porta Nigra is considered a unique achievement of 2nd-century Roman architecture.
