Winegrowing, Fruit and the Historic Village Centre

Engelstadt combines a historic village centre with the rolling landscape of Rheinhessen. Wine and fruit growing are the main features of the area. Local wineries and regional specialities are also part of its character; the latter are enjoyed with a glass of wine. In Engelstadt, village history and a strong connection to wine go hand in hand. If you are deciding between the village centre, wine and a bike ride during your stay, you will find different options in the village and along the Orchard Route.

Enjoy Wine and Plan Around Events

On the edge of Engelstadt, the Gutschänke Am Römerberg offers a wine garden where you can relax. Weingut Zimmer-Mengel is located on an estate in the middle of the vineyards, where guests can experience and enjoy wine. The two places offer different experiences: a wine garden on the edge of the village and a winery among the vineyards. Before travelling, check the Gutschänke’s current opening arrangements and confirm access to the winery.

Engelstadt’s Kerb festival traditionally takes place over five days on the second weekend in September. It includes live music and activities for children and young people. At Jazz for 5 in the Dalles village square, tastings of Engelstadt wines, sparkling wines and sparkling wine are accompanied by food from the kitchen and grill; the Fun Time Big Band performs live jazz. The events therefore offer different highlights: the Kerb programme also includes activities for children and young people, while Jazz for 5 features wine tastings, food and jazz music. If you plan to include one of the festivals in your trip, check the specific dates and programmes in advance.

Village History at the Fountain and Church

The village fountain on Hauptstraße bears the year 1865. This is considered the date of a renovation; the fountain itself is thought to be older. The year you can see therefore refers to a restoration, not to the fountain’s presumed age.

The Protestant parish church is a medieval landmark of Engelstadt. It was first mentioned in 1228 and is dedicated to Saint Mauritius. Its architectural features include the Romanesque west tower and the lintel of the south portal, which is decorated with relief motifs. Some of the architectural details mentioned are based on historical interpretation.

Explore the Orchard Route

The Orchard Route runs from Nieder-Hilbersheim to Engelstadt and climbs 150 metres in elevation. The route follows farm tracks and local roads. For planning a bike ride, both the climb and the change in road types are useful points of reference. The Orchard Route offers sweeping views from the plateau. Before setting out, check whether any temporary detours apply.

Just beyond Engelstadt, a vineyard swing with a small viewing tower stands along the Orchard Route. It serves as a rest stop before the descent into the Selz Valley. The ride therefore includes a designated place to pause after the climb and before continuing down into the valley.
