In Sayn, industrial heritage and aristocratic history meet gardens, historic sites and hiking trails. Visitor attractions include the Sayner Hütte, Schloss Sayn with the Neues Museum, the Butterfly Garden, the Princely Castle Park, Burg Sayn, Sayn Abbey, Hein’s Mill, the Limes Roman Tower and the Sayn High Ropes Course. If you are looking for a hotel in Sayn, consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on cultural sites or on the routes described here.

Hikes with different focuses

The Saynsteig leads through shady woodland and along natural paths to rocky cliffs and viewpoints towards the Rhine Valley and the Eifel. The Sayner Aussichten offers a different focus: the route passes Burg Sayn, Schloss Sayn and Sayn Abbey before leading into the Brexbach Valley and crossing the Pulverberg. This gives you the choice between a route featuring woodland, rocks and distant views, and one that connects several historic sites with a further stretch through the Brexbach Valley. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Schloss Sayn and the Neues Museum

Schloss Sayn is home to the Neues Museum. The museum focuses on aspects of the history and private life of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn family; it also includes a richly coloured chapel. This offers a special perspective on the family’s history, while the chapel adds a distinctive design feature. Access arrangements may vary; check the latest conditions before your visit.

More cultural sites in the wider destination of Bendorf

The wider destination of Bendorf offers further historical and natural attractions. The Sayner Hütte is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and is considered the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to hold this distinction. Following careful restoration, it offers modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations; their content may change over time. The accessible tour of the ironworks grounds starts at the visitor centre in the former machine factory of the Sayner Hütte, built in 1909. Since 2020, the Tourist Information office has been located in the visitor centre. It can help with planning and organising holidays and day trips to Bendorf and the surrounding area.

From 1840 to 1850, Sayn Castle Park was landscaped in the style of an English garden. Its features include a castle pond with a fountain, a pond bridge with a rustic wooden railing, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded quiet spots. The 800-year-old ancestral castle of the Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn towers high above Sayn, near Bendorf on the Rhine. From there, panoramic views extend across the heights of the Westerwald, the Rhine plain and the volcanic hills of the Eifel. The abbey also has historical significance: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202.

On the Pulverberg in Bendorf-Sayn is a Limes experience area featuring a listed reconstruction of a Roman watchtower dating from 1912, as well as an earthwork and palisades. Trained Limes Cicerones offer dramatic guided tours at the Roman tower and hikes exploring the Limes and Roman history for all age groups; availability may vary. The Butterfly Garden is home not only to exotic butterflies but also to button quail, tortoises, tropical finches and Japanese koi. A ticket to the garden also gives you the option of visiting the directly adjacent Neues Museum in Schloss Sayn. Check the ticket conditions in advance; opening times and access arrangements for individual attractions may also vary.
