Herresbach: Circular Routes, Eifel Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Herresbach
Herresbach is particularly easy to explore when planning a trip through its hiking trails: Two circular routes differ clearly in length, and both start and finish at the village square. Views across the Eifel, the Guardian Angel Chapel and the Herresbach wayside shrine add to the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Herresbach, these highlights can help you decide whether your stay should focus mainly on hiking or also on cultural history.
Hiking from Herresbach: two circular routes
The Weitblick hiking trail is 15.9 kilometres long, rated moderate, and starts and finishes at Herresbach village square. The Sonnen circular route is about six kilometres long; its start and finish are beside the Guardian Angel Chapel at the village square. This gives you two clearly different route lengths to consider when planning: the Sonnen circular route is the shorter loop, while the Weitblick hiking trail adds a moderate difficulty rating to the longer distance.
The two routes also differ in their landscapes. The Weitblick hiking trail follows the Eschbach stream, crosses meadows above the district of Eschbach and climbs towards Hohe Acht and the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower. From the section by the tower, the view extends across the Eifel, Hunsrück and Westerwald. The Sonnen circular route offers panoramic views over the meadows, forests and fields of the Vordereifel and reaches the Geiersbusch juniper heath; along the way, there are views of Hochbermel, Boos Eifel Tower, Hochkelberg and Nürburg.
Starting point and wayfinding
A car park for the Weitblick hiking trail is available at the village square beside the Guardian Angel Chapel. Signposting may be incomplete in some sections. Therefore, download the GPX track and a map before setting out.
Chapel and places of remembrance
The Guardian Angel Chapel in Herresbach was built in 1843 from local rubble stone and is a protected cultural monument. It adds a clear focus on cultural history to the hiking trails. The Herresbach wayside shrine offers a place to pause and reflect.
The Herresbach oak sapling was considered to be an oak several hundred years old and was lost in 2007 during Storm Kyrill. A shelter nearby offers views across wide fields and meadows. At these places, remembrance and reflection meet views of the open landscape.
More cultural attractions in the wider destination
The wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz has other distinct cultural attractions. Genoveva Castle in Mayen was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction.
Also for road cycling
Herresbach offers varied opportunities for road cycling. The Eifel landscape is characterised by hilly stretches and scenic views. When planning your trip, you can weigh up hiking and road cycling as different activity focuses.
