Münstermaifeld brings together the collegiate church of the former monastery, city walks, museums and the Maifeld Cycling and Hiking Trail. When looking for a hotel, you can choose your focus based on whether you want to explore local sights, visit a museum or include a cycling route in your plans. The various tours and trails offer different points of reference for this.

Collegiate Church, City Walk and Museums

The Collegiate Church of St. Martin and St. Severus is the church of the former St. Martin and St. Severus monastery. Its connection to the history of the former monastery is a distinct point of reference among Münstermaifeld’s cultural attractions.

A historical city walk takes you to Münstermaifeld’s main sights on a walk lasting just under an hour. A separate smartphone-based city walk lets you explore 31 sights. The two options offer different ways to plan: the historical walk focuses on the approximate duration, while the smartphone tour specifies the number of sights. You can choose whether to plan around the time estimate or the explicitly stated selection, depending on what matters most to you as you explore.

The Maifeld Archaeological Museum features the permanent exhibition “Wealth. Power. Salvation.” It is located in the vaulted cellar beneath the Tourist Information Centre, in the former provost’s residence at Münsterplatz. The exhibition title and precise location give the museum a clearly defined profile among the town’s cultural attractions.

The Münstermaifeld Local History and Experience Museum includes additional museum rooms, including a historic blacksmith’s shop. It is part of this museum. Alongside the archaeological permanent exhibition, it offers a different museum theme, without requiring the blacksmith’s shop to be classified as a museum in its own right.

The Maifeld Cycling and Hiking Trail: Railway Line and Open-Air Art

The Maifeld Cycling and Hiking Trail follows a disused, almost level railway line between Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen. It also serves as a sculpture trail: artworks turn it into an open-air museum in the countryside. The route description thus combines the former railway line with outdoor art. From the former Münstermaifeld railway station, the route initially follows the main cycle and hiking trail; after about 500 metres, the route branches off towards Eltz Castle. This approximate distance indicates the point where the route branches off, not the total length of the Maifeld Cycling and Hiking Trail.

More cultural attractions in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz

The wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz is home to other cultural sites with their own histories. Genoveva Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier, and is one of Mayen’s landmarks. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, its modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; the ironworks also offers guided tours and creative workshops.

Sayn Abbey also adds to this regional picture: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. The abbey’s exterior paintings, dating from around 1255, are considered the best-preserved from the High Middle Ages in Germany. Genoveva Castle and the abbey can be placed in context by their different dates; Sayn Ironworks adds another theme with its industrial heritage and exhibitions. These places belong to the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz, not to Münstermaifeld’s sights.
