Discover Vordereifel: Heathland, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Vordereifel
Vordereifel combines volcanic landscapes with broad ridges and idyllic valleys. Hiking and cycling tours, including multi-day active trips, offer a range of ways to spend your stay. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether nature, outdoor activities or culture will shape your itinerary. The following examples offer inspiration across these themes—from open heathland to historic sights.
Heathland and Nature Conservation
Together with the areas in neighboring Ahrweiler district, Vordereifel’s juniper heaths are among the largest surviving areas on acidic bedrock in Rhineland-Palatinate and the neighboring federal states. This comparison therefore covers the juniper heaths in both areas. One specific hiking destination is the Traumpfad Bergheidenweg, which leads through open heathland to the Heidbüchel nature reserve.
The heath garden on Wabelsberg near Langscheid also combines nature experiences with educational activities. It is both an educational trail and a botanical garden, and provides information about characteristic heathland plant species. Dr. Heinrich Menke Park is a nature reserve on the western spur of RaĂźberg. Access may depend on the weather, so bear this in mind when planning your visit.
Hiking and Cycling Tours
The Traumpfade trails in Vordereifel pass through forests, fields and meadows. The Traumpfädchen Virneburger Burgblick offers a different kind of outing: this 3.5-kilometer circular hiking trail leads to the ruins of Virneburg Castle and is rated easy and family-friendly. Check for current route information before setting out.
Vordereifel has cycling routes for all difficulty levels. Mountain bikers can explore the holiday region on specially designated MTB routes. This means there are several types of active outings to choose from: hiking trails through forests and open countryside, cycling routes of varying difficulty, and dedicated mountain biking trails.
Sights and Guided Tours
Visitor attractions in Vordereifel include the Grube Bendisberg visitor mine, Bürresheim Castle, the ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg in Monreal, the ruins of Virneburg Castle, as well as museums and viewpoints. You can choose between nature experiences and cultural attractions rather than limiting your stay to just one kind of outing.
The Grube Bendisberg visitor mine, with its three tunnels, offers a glimpse inside the earth. Tours pass through one, two or three tunnels and provide insights into the geology and mining techniques used to extract ore from the deposit. The visit thus combines the underground world of the mine with an introduction to the work involved in extracting ore. BĂĽrresheim Castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Check the opening details before your visit and plan to tour the castle with a guide.
Culture in Mayen
Genoveva Castle is a landmark of Mayen. It stands on a rocky outcrop above the market square. The late Gothic castle consists of an upper castle, with the 34-meter-high Goloturm tower, and a lower-lying outer castle. The Genoveva Castle houses the EifelTotal and German Slate Mine exhibitions of the Eifel Museum.
Parts of the town fortifications have also survived: large sections of Mayen’s town wall remain, and a restored defensive walkway can be followed as far as Genoveva Castle. Every summer, the Mayen Castle Festival turns the castle into a venue for theater, music and social gatherings. City walks in Mayen are available on request; the historical city tour lasts around 90 minutes and passes through the town center. Mayen thus offers its own blend of a castle, local history and seasonal cultural events.
