Buchholz (Westerwald): Hiking and Chapels
Accommodation in Buchholz
Buchholz (Westerwald) offers marked hiking trails and various architectural and cultural landmarks. When choosing a route, you can compare distances and difficulty levels; chapels and the church tower of St. Pantaleon offer different points of interest. The Buchholzer Moor nature reserve is also nearby.
Hiking: Circular Trails by Distance and Difficulty
The well-developed and signposted hiking trail network in the local municipality of Buchholz is about 45 km long and includes routes A1 and B1 to B3. The circular trails include:
- A1 Basalt Trail: 10.0 km, easy circular trail.
- B1 Barger Heck Trail: 11.6 km, easy circular trail.
- B2 Dreiherrenstein Trail: 12.5 km, easy circular trail.
- B3 Silberberg Trail: 10.7 km, circular trail of moderate difficulty.
A1 is the shortest of the four circular trails, while B2 is the longest. In terms of difficulty, A1, B1 and B2 are easy, while B3 is rated moderate. You can therefore start by considering the listed distance or difficulty, rather than treating all four routes as equivalent options.
The Westerwald Association's Hiking Trail I is on a different scale: its 121.6 km route runs from Königswinter to Herborn through the local municipality of Buchholz. This distance refers to the entire trail, not to a circular route within the municipality. If you plan to hike the trail, check local route information before setting out; conditions and trail markings can change.
Chapels and Landmarks in Buchholz
The Marienkapelle is in Sauerwiese, a district of the local municipality of Buchholz. It stands in a quiet meadow near the Weißenfels family estate and can only be reached on foot. Its location in the district and its setting in the meadow give this building a distinctive place in the local landscape.
A second chapel is located in Oberscheid, a district of Buchholz. The Catholic chapel was built in 1857 on private initiative. In 1980, the Oberscheid village community carried out extensive renovation work themselves. The two dates mark distinct stages: the building was followed, more than a century later, by a renovation carried out by the community.
The church tower of St. Pantaleon is the landmark of Buchholz and is about 44 m tall. This approximate height gives a specific measure by which to appreciate the striking building.
Buchholzer Moor Nearby
The “Buchholzer Moor” nature reserve lies about 1 km west of the municipality, directly on the state border with North Rhine-Westphalia.
