Döttesfeld can be considered for trip planning primarily through its trails and nature-related themes. The forest nature trail, the WesterwaldSteig and the Hölderstein via ferrata represent different activities; cycling routes and traces of the railway era round out the picture. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you get a sense of the destination. Wildlife watching, hiking, climbing and cycling each offer a different starting point for planning.

Experience nature on the forest nature trail

The forest nature trail between Breitscheid and Döttesfeld is about six kilometres long. Information boards explain the local flora and fauna, while a natural biotope illustrates ecological connections. The boards draw attention to local species, while the biotope highlights ecological relationships. Döttesfeld’s well-maintained hiking trails also include barbecue huts where you can take a break. The trail’s nature theme therefore covers both knowledge of local species and ecological connections; the rest stops along the hiking trails provide another practical point of reference.

Hiking and climbing at Hölderstein

The WesterwaldSteig passes through parts of the Grenzbach valley at Hölderstein, near Döttesfeld, and by a via ferrata. The Hölderstein via ferrata is about 300 metres long, climbs 80 metres and runs over metal ladders, step irons and a bridge. Suitable climbing equipment is required; use is at your own risk. Climbing equipment for the via ferrata can be rented at the “Zum Wiedbachtal” hotel in Döttesfeld.

A forest car park serves as a landmark: the forest nature trail starts below it, and the footpath to the Hölderstein via ferrata begins opposite the shelter. A yellow-marked access path of the WesterwaldSteig leads to the via ferrata from a hiking car park near Breitscheid.

Cycling and traces of the railway era

Low-traffic roads around Döttesfeld provide access to cycling routes with some climbs and descents. This gives the cycling routes a different character from the forest nature trail, which is about six kilometres long: elevation changes are a key feature of the cycling routes, while the trail is defined by its length and nature information. The B256 federal road runs near Döttesfeld and connects Neuwied with Altenkirchen.

The railway era is also among the themes of the Wied Valley: the route passes remnants that have been overgrown by nature. Döttesfeld has a former railway tunnel. The Jagdhütte Döttesfeld, a café beer garden with a rustic ambience in natural surroundings, is another local place to visit.
