Accommodation in Neuwied
When looking for a hotel in Neuwied, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you: furniture art, theatre, archaeological research, animal programmes, or nature along the Rhine and in the foothills of the Westerwald.
Cultural venues: museum, gallery and theatre
The Roentgen Museum Neuwied houses a collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks that is unique worldwide. Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David Roentgen (1743–1807) were the most important furniture makers of the 18th century. With their state-of-the-art luxury furniture at the time, known as “Neuwied furniture”, they supplied European royal courts from Paris to Saint Petersburg.
The STADTGALERIE Mennonitenkirche is located right by the levee, in the heart of Neuwied city centre. It occupies the former premises of a Mennonite church built in 1768. The Schlosstheater adds another cultural highlight: it is housed in an annex of Neuwied Palace. Regular performances by the LandesbĂĽhne Rheinland-Pfalz take place there.
Rommersdorf Abbey: culture and seasonal visits
Rommersdorf Abbey is a former Premonstratensian abbey and is now a venue for theatre, concerts and readings. The listed venues include the English Garden, the cloister and the abbey church. A visit therefore offers a look at both the site’s former function as an abbey and its present-day cultural use.
Every year from Easter until the beginning of November, the abbey can be visited on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Information on its history and art history, as well as guided tours led by knowledgeable Rommersdorf experts, is available free of charge. Check the seasonal visiting hours before your trip.
MONREPOS and Neuwied Zoo
MONREPOS in Neuwied is an archaeological research centre and museum dedicated to human behavioural evolution. One important detail for planning your journey is that MONREPOS cannot be reached directly by public transport. The nearest bus stop is “Waldesruh” in the Segendorf district; from there, a walk of several kilometres still leads to MONREPOS. Check your travel options before visiting.
Neuwied Zoo is the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its programmes include children’s birthday parties, evening tours, animal photography workshops and programmes for school classes. This makes it different in focus from MONREPOS, which is dedicated to human behavioural evolution.
The Rhine, Westerwald and levee
The natural areas along the Rhine and in the foothills of the Westerwald near Neuwied are particularly well suited to hiking and cycling. Part of the Limes Cycle Route runs through the city of Neuwied. Alongside the landscapes mentioned, there is therefore also a named cycle route with a direct connection to the city.
The levee information centre and 22 interactive stations present Neuwied’s levee as a landmark, along with the city’s many features, large and small, for residents and visitors. If you are interested in attractions, museums and exhibitions, the Neuwied Tourist Information Office can advise you. It also sells tickets for local events and provides information about city tours.
