Wallau: Nature, Herbs and Hiking
Accommodation in Wallau
Wallau offers opportunities to enjoy nature, go hiking, and learn about plants. The district is home to a nature shelter and an herb garden; the shelter serves as a meeting point for the hiking group’s monthly hikes.
Nature Shelter and Herbs in Wallau
One hike led from the nature shelter to Griesenbach, where it visited an orchard meadow and a wet meadow, before returning to Wallau. The two types of meadow give the route different landscape features. If you consider natural attractions when choosing a hike, this combination offers a specific point of comparison.
The nature shelter also serves as a starting point for herb workshops and guided tours about wild herbs in the surrounding area. Unlike the hike, these focus on plant knowledge. This gives you two distinct nature themes to choose from: a route with named meadows as destinations, or workshops and guided tours about herbs. There is also an herb garden on a property in the Wallau district.
Hiking Trails in the Municipality of Buchholz (Westerwald)
The well-developed and marked network of hiking trails in the municipality of Buchholz (Westerwald) includes trails A1 and B1–B3 and is approximately 45 km long in total. The A1 Basalt Trail is an easy 10.0 km loop. The 11.6 km B1 Barger Heck Trail and the 12.5 km B2 Dreiherrenstein Trail are also easy. The 10.7 km B3 Silberberg Trail is of moderate difficulty.
When choosing between these four loops, it is worth considering both distance and difficulty: A1 is the shortest and is rated easy, while B3, which is only 0.7 km longer, is rated moderate. B1 and B2 are longer, but are also easy. Difficulty therefore cannot be determined by distance alone. The hiking trails in the municipality also provide access to various cultural and historical sites and nature reserves, which are marked with information boards.
On its 121.6 km route from Königswinter to Herborn, the Westerwald Association’s Hiking Trail I passes through the municipality of Buchholz. With its specified endpoints and considerably greater length, it differs from the loop trails. Before setting out, it is advisable to check local information about the route and trail markings.
