Gondershausen is a suitable destination for a trip where hiking and cycling play different roles. The Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail starts at the Gunthershalle in the village; the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route passes through Gondershausen on its route from Emmelshausen to Burgen. The village is therefore both the starting point of the hiking trail and part of a longer cycling route.

Hiking from the Gunthershalle

The 16.6-kilometre Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail combines views across open fields with the Baybach Gorge and a forest lake. Open countryside, a gorge and a forest lake are all part of the route. The trail’s hiking certification is valid until June 2027.

Cycling through Gondershausen

The Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route is classified as an easy, 22.05-kilometre route from Emmelshausen to Burgen. It passes through Gondershausen and offers views across the HunsrĂĽck towards the Eifel volcanic hills. Unlike the Rabenlay Trail, which starts in Gondershausen, both endpoints of this cycling route are in other towns. Your route choice therefore also depends on whether you are planning a hike that starts in the village or a ride between Emmelshausen and Burgen.

The Rhine-HunsrĂĽck region in context

Within the broader Rhine-Hunsrück destination, the Rhine-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left bank of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district’s landscapes include large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002.

The Rhine-HunsrĂĽck district also offers further regional options for hiking and cycling. The many hiking trails include the certified Soonwaldsteig; check the route and certification before setting out on a specific hike. The Saar-HunsrĂĽck Climb crosses the HunsrĂĽck via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard, covering a total of 410 kilometres over 27 stages. Extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths also run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. As conditions on individual routes may change, it is advisable to check the specific route shortly before your trip.

For the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling tours on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for your travel date, as this information applies to the 2026 season. If you would also like to explore regional history within the broader destination, the House of Regional History in Kastellaun covers developments from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check opening hours before your visit.
