If you are considering Berghausen as a destination for a stay, local history and a themed hiking trail come together here. Half-timbered houses, historic bridges and traces of former work in the ore mines provide tangible points of reference for the town’s history. The Heart Path of Peace adds a longer hiking route with stops and views across the landscape. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether to focus on architectural history, walking through the landscape, or both.

Architectural history at specific addresses

The historic monuments register, as of June 8, 2026, lists the half-timbered house at Hauptstraße 11, with decorative slate dating from 1857. The bridge over the Dörsbach, southwest of the built-up area, is also listed as a monument. It dates from the 19th century, has two arches, and is built of rubble stone and brick. Details about its location, design and materials give the bridge a distinct place in the town’s history.

At KirchstraĂźe 4, a three-sided farmstead comprises a residential building and outbuildings. The half-timbered house at this address dates from the 18th century; its architectural features also include a rubble-stone stable with an open-sided porch. Another half-timbered house at Panngasse 1 is partly built of solid masonry and is plastered or clad in slate. It is thought to date from the 17th or 18th century. The oldest surviving houses in Berghausen date from the 18th century. If you are interested in rural architectural history during your stay, these different building styles and dates offer more than a single historical point of reference.

Heart Path of Peace: 8.7 kilometers with 13 stations

Berghausen is the starting area for the 8.7-kilometer Heart Path of Peace, a themed hiking and pilgrimage route. The first station is in Berghausen, at the old bridge, which is designated a natural monument. The route has 13 stations in total. It follows a heart-shaped course; themed panels, wooden seating and heart-shaped features carry the theme along the trail. The route description also mentions distant views across the Taunus and a stretch through the Dörsbach valley. The distance, stations and landscape features offer different points of reference when deciding how to include the trail in your trip plans.

A tourism brochure dating from 2019 describes the Heart Path as an easy hike that can be used year-round and recommends sturdy footwear. Check trail conditions locally before setting out. The same brochure mentions a parking option and access by public transport; also check current access options before your hike. This way, both your choice of route and your journey there can be based on the conditions at the time of your visit.

Historical traces and local tradition

Berghausen is said to have originated between the 8th and 9th centuries, during the Carolingian period, as a stopping place on an old ridgeway. A bridge structure over the Dörsbach is documented in connection with Berghausen’s history as early as 1608. This early reference adds to the history of the later, protected bridge dating from the 19th century, without treating the two as the same structure. Work in the surrounding ore mines was also part of the town’s history: people who worked there lived in Berghausen.

Other traditions concern water and the landscape. A local tradition links the source of the Mattebach in the rural area of Berghausen with healing effects for eye ailments. A mineral spring in the Berghausen district was developed as a mineral-water well in 1912–1913.
