Southern Wine Route: Castles, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Southern Wine Route
The Southern Wine Route offers a variety of reasons to visit: castles and exhibitions, themed trails, nature experiences and cycling opportunities. To plan your trip, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on.
The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve Nature Park. This geographical connection is a distinctive feature of the region.
Castles, Museums and History
Landeck Castle has a 25-metre-high platform overlooking the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest. The view depends on the weather. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. Leinsweiler’s Madenburg Castle features a permanent exhibition on its history.
The Museum unterm Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels covers the history of the town, Trifels Castle and the Hohenstaufen dynasty, as well as the development of the landscape in the Palatinate Forest. The Paper Museum in Gleisweiler offers a hands-on experience of a different kind: visitors can make their own paper on opening days or by arrangement. Check current visiting options before you travel.
Trails with Different Themes
The TrifelsErlebnisWeg is 3.6 kilometres long, rated easy and features 18 play and learning stations. Some digital content may change. The Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a 6.1-kilometre circular route suitable for pushchairs, running around Föhrlenberg and focusing on the Palatinate chestnut. It is 2.5 kilometres longer than the TrifelsErlebnisWeg and also differs in being a circular route and in its theme. Seasonal conditions may affect its use.
At Silz Lake, the Climate and Nature Experience Trail has two circular routes of different lengths. Topics include forests, biodiversity, drinking water extraction and water retention. The Klosterundweg trail at EuĂźerthal Abbey Church focuses on history, providing information about the former Cistercian monastery.
Nature and Cycling Opportunities
Silz Wildlife and Hiking Park covers more than 100 hectares and is home to 400 animals from 15 European species. The park includes a large adventure playground. Animal numbers and park facilities may change; take the latest information into account when planning your visit.
The “Radwandern in der Südpfalz” cycling map covers 27 signposted cycle routes and circular tours. It spans the area from the Rhine via the Southern Wine Route to the Palatinate Forest. Map editions and signage may be updated, so check the edition you are using for your plans and the current status of the routes.
The Burgentour is listed as an individual cycle tour measuring 42.4 kilometres; its length may change following route revisions. The challenging Pfälzer Hüttentour is 19 kilometres long and leads to five huts serving regional specialities. The route and hut availability may change seasonally. These details offer different starting points for planning: a designated circular cycling route or a challenging tour with places to stop for refreshments.
