Discover Hentern: Trails and Excursion Destinations
Accommodation in Hentern
Hentern offers two distinctly different ways to shape your stay: the Knowledge Trail combines a loop through the village with topics relating to nature, the landscape and local infrastructure, while the Mindfulness Trail focuses on forest bathing and sensory exercises. You can choose based on your interests whether you would prefer a themed walking route or a nature experience with a set duration.
Trails with Different Focuses
The Knowledge Trail is an approximately two-kilometre educational loop around and through Hentern. It starts at the village square and passes through meadows, fields and woodland. Its topics range from local flora and fauna to forestry and hunting, as well as the weather station and the plant-based wastewater treatment facility. The route thus offers an insight into nature, land use and technical facilities in the village.
The Mindfulness Trail has a different focus. Six illustrated stations and sensory exercises accompany the forest-bathing experience; allow about one to one and a half hours for the complete route. No particular level of fitness is required. Parking is available at Haus AchtsamZeit. If you are planning to attend guided sessions or visit facilities, check their current status in advance.
The trail information is easiest to distinguish by type: the approximate route length is given for the Knowledge Trail, while the duration for the complete route is given for the Mindfulness Trail. This lets you use the relevant reference point when planning your day. Excursion destinations from Hentern include Trier and the historic old town of Saarburg; Luxembourg and Saarbrücken are also considered easily accessible.
More to Discover in the Wider Trier-Saarburg Travel Region
Trier-Saarburg district has 492 kilometres of cycle paths. The Tälchen Tour is classified as a moderately difficult circular route, is 37.28 kilometres long and is listed as taking about two hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Konz, leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve and recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town.
Large sections of Saarburg Castle’s outer walls and a residential tower have been preserved; several viewing terraces and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. Along the Viezstraße, fruit growers, fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs offer information, regional recipes and experiences centred on Viez.
Roman Traces in Tawern and Konz
The Roman roadside settlement of Tabernae in Tawern is considered the origin of the village and was established shortly before the turn of the era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses an authentic 1:75-scale model; a large reconstructed temple complex also stands in the forest. The free ARGO app lets you view the temple complex on site at its original size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display.
Roman traces have also been preserved in Konz: part of a cold-water pool, about four metres high, remains from the Roman imperial palace. From the palace’s former terrace, you can see the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding mountains.
