If you are looking for a hotel in Irsch, its connection with hiking may be an important factor in choosing your destination: Irsch is associated with premium hiking in the Saar-Obermosel region. The hiking routes lead, among other places, through steep vineyards, river valleys, gorges and stream valleys, as well as nature reserves with viewpoints. The range therefore extends from open vineyard landscapes to narrower valleys and protected natural areas.

Hiking, cycling and regional cuisine

Cycling is also a feature of the Saar-Obermosel region. Mostly flat cycling routes run along the Moselle, Saar and Sauer rivers. They are suitable for leisurely rides, family outings and multi-day tours. By comparison, the hiking trails also take in steep vineyards and gorges.

The culinary diversity of the Saar-Obermosel region includes rediscovered traditional dishes. What individual restaurants offer may change; check current menus directly if needed.

In the Trier-Saarburg district

There are 492 kilometres of cycling routes in the Trier-Saarburg district. There is also a dense network of cycling and hiking trails along the Viezstraße. Fruit growers, fruit brandy distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs along the road offer information, regional recipes and experiences related to Viez.

The Tälchen Tour is designated as a moderately difficult circular route. It is 37.28 kilometres long, has a stated duration of about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and starts and ends in Konz. The route leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve; it also recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. At Saarburg Castle, large sections of the enclosing walls and a residential tower have been preserved. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley.

In Tawern, the Roman road settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses an authentic model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; the large reconstructed temple complex is also located in the forest. The free ARGO app lets you view it on site at full size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display.

In Konz, part of a cold-water basin about four metres high has survived from the Roman imperial palace. The former terrace offers views of the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding hills. The history of Freudenburg Castle dates back to a castle built in the 14th century to control the military road between Trier and Metz.

The Roman theatre at Kastel-Staadt is complemented by a 2.5-kilometre Archaeological Discovery Trail. The Kasteler Felsenpfad leads through a red sandstone landscape with striking rock formations. Panoramic views of the Saar Valley can be enjoyed across the Pinschbach valley and from the Altfels.
