Discover Konz
Accommodation in Konz
Konz offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: Roman architecture, regional culture, places at the mouth of the Saar, and trails through forests and vineyards. You can focus on historic sites and exhibitions or compare the walking and cycling routes described here. The following stops show which aspects of the town might be of particular interest to you.
Roman History and Regional Culture
The Roscheider Hof is dedicated to the folk culture of the Moselle and Saar regions. Extensive permanent exhibitions and reconstructed, furnished houses and farmsteads from the 19th and early 20th centuries bring the subject to life in different ways: the historic buildings are part of the presentation, alongside the exhibitions.
The Saar Bridge, also known as the Roman Bridge, is regarded as a testament to Roman engineering. A Roman bridge once crossed the Saar here, carrying an important long-distance road. The poet Ausonius mentioned the bridge in 371. The Imperial Palace is also associated with Ausonius: it is considered a probably imperial complex of buildings from the 4th century and is mentioned in the Mosella in 371. Konz thus brings together two distinct aspects of Roman history: the bridge and its former role in the road network, and a complex of buildings whose imperial character is considered probable.
Karthaus Monastery also has a complex architectural history. The complex was built between 1670 and 1830, destroyed during the French Revolution, and rebuilt from 1855 by Franciscan nuns with reference to Baroque plans. Another historic object is the restored steam locomotive 064 393-2, known as the “Bubikopf”: it is displayed on Bahnhofstraße.
The Mouth of the Saar and the Market Square
At the mouth of the Saar, a triangular sculpture is intended as a place for quiet and meditation. At the same time, the area is used by cyclists, anglers, water sports enthusiasts and walkers. In the peaceful “Panoramablick” area, cyclists can stop and look out over the river landscape. Different uses therefore come together here: it is a place to pause, as well as an area people pass through by bike or on foot.
In the town centre, the market square offers a different setting. It features a large water-play fountain made of polished granite, which invites visitors to cool off on sunny days. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between these places according to your interests: the mouth of the Saar combines river views, a sculpture and various uses, while the market square’s defining feature is its water-play fountain in a public space.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Tours
The Konzer Höhenrunde is a premium hiking trail that alternates between forest and open vineyard landscapes. Viewpoints at Falkenhof and the “Himmelsschaukel” (“Sky Swing”) are among the route’s features, along with seating and other places to stop and linger. Its premium-trail designation, route and facilities may change; check the latest information before setting out.
The Konzer Panoramaweg offers a different kind of walk: the circular route passes through Konz-Roscheid and the Konzer Tälchen, offers views of the river landscape and the town, and goes by the Roscheider Hof open-air museum. When choosing between the two hiking trails, you can refer to the differences described here: the Höhenrunde alternates between forest and open vineyards and includes viewpoints; the Panoramaweg combines a circular route through the areas mentioned with views of the town and river, as well as a stretch past the museum. The route and signage may change, so check the latest information before setting out.
There are different routes for cycling, too. The Kidstour Saar-Radweg follows a flat, separate cycle path to an adventure playground and a barbecue area on the banks of the Moselle in Konz. Facilities may change; check the latest information if this stop is important to your plans. The E-Bike-Tälchen-Tour starts and ends in Konz. It passes through the wine-growing villages of the Konzer Tälchen, follows the Saar Cycle Path to Saarburg, and returns through the Mannebachtal. This lets you choose according to the type of route you want: a family route to the destinations mentioned, or a circular tour starting and ending in Konz that passes through Saarburg.
