If you choose Krettnach as your destination, you can plan your trip around three themes: hiking, architectural history and viticulture. The Karlskopf panoramic trail has a specific connection to the local area and a starting point in the village; St. Ursula combines an 18th-century church building with an older vaulted ceiling. The Konzer Tälchen also has a distinctive viticultural character.

Trails and Routes

The Karlskopf panoramic trail passes through the Krettnach district; one starting point is at the Krettnach community center. These represent two different scales for orientation: the district describes the trail’s geographic setting, while the community center is a specific starting point. If hiking is important to your trip, you can include Krettnach in your plans based on both details: one places the route geographically, while the other identifies a possible starting point.

The approximately 33 km Tälchen Tour starts in Konz, passes through the Konzer Tälchen and the villages of Niedermennig, Obermennig and Krettnach, continues via Wiltingen and ends in Saarburg. The approximate distance gives you a concrete measure for planning your trip, while the sequence of villages makes the regional route easy to follow. Unlike the Karlskopf panoramic trail, this route focuses on a series of places between its start and finish; for the panoramic trail, the Krettnach district and the starting point at the community center are the main local references. Check the route again before making your plans; the tour description dates from 2020.

St. Ursula and Architectural History

St. Ursula is Krettnach’s Catholic church and was built in 1733–1734. The lower level contains a ribbed vault dating from the 12th century. The vault therefore represents a significantly earlier period within the church building than the church’s own construction date. This chronological layering is useful for understanding the building’s history: the construction date and the vault refer to different periods.

The church is situated on higher ground and can be reached via a long stone staircase. Take this access into account when planning your visit, and check in advance whether the church is currently accessible.

Romanesque Tower in Krettnach

The Romanesque tower in Krettnach is the oldest surviving part of the church, which was first mentioned in 1148.

Viticulture in the Konzer Tälchen

Krettnach is a village in the Konzer Tälchen with a strong viticultural character. Riesling vines grow predominantly on the valley’s favorable slopes. Viticulture adds a landscape perspective to the choice of destination: alongside the specific place name Krettnach, the Konzer Tälchen provides the regional setting. For travelers who take viticulture and landscape into account when choosing a destination, this connection is a distinct consideration alongside the hiking route and church building. The valley setting broadens the choice of destination with a perspective that goes beyond individual trail points and buildings.
