The Morscheider Grenzpfad is a 15.6-kilometer premium hiking trail in Morscheid and is part of the Saar-Hunsrück premium hiking region. In addition to hiking, the landscape, architectural history, and traces of former slate mining can be potential focal points of a stay. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on the trail itself or instead on historical and winegrowing themes.

Hiking the Morscheider Grenzpfad

The route runs mainly through varied woodland and small areas of open land. The trail surface is listed as 64 percent natural path, 33 percent lightly surfaced path, and 3 percent asphalt or concrete. Three information boards also explain the water supply and the historic use of the Ruwer Valley. Alongside the landscape, water and the valley’s history are therefore among the topics along the trail.

Landscape, geology, and mining history

The Grenzpfad climbs to the Langenstein natural monument. The quartz vein there formed 350 to 400 million years ago and rises up to 9 meters. Viewpoints along the trail overlook the Riveris Dam; its dam is 178 meters wide and 50 meters high. The path also passes Kirchenloch, a former slate mine and a remnant of traditional slate mining in Morscheid.

Morscheid lies on a ridge between the Ruwer and Riveris valleys; its setting is marked by a steeply sloping slate plateau. Evidence in the area points to earlier slate and ore mining. Vines grow on steep slopes in the northeastern part of the village. The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route also runs below Morscheid.

Getting to the hiking trail

The stated driving route to the trail starts at Hauptstraße 42 in Morscheid, goes via the sports field, and continues to the parking lot at the Schweinspielhütte. There is no direct public transport connection to the Morscheider Grenzpfad. Take this into account when planning your journey.

Church and historic small monuments

The Catholic parish church of St. Martin is a hall church in the Rundbogenstil (round-arch style), dating from 1864/66. It has a freestanding medieval tower. The same church complex thus brings together 19th-century building phases and a much older tower.

A Baroque shaft cross near Boorwiese 1 dates from 1736; a niche cross near Hauptstraße 40 dates from 1894. The wayside shrine on K 65 below the Schloss Marienlay winery contains a masonry niche for a Madonna dating from around 1860. These examples therefore span the period from the Baroque era to the late 19th century.

Schloss Marienlay and wine

The Schloss Marienlay winery is a three-sided farm complex in the local style, built from quarried slate in 1922/27. The wine tasting selection presented ranges from VDP estate wines to wines from VDP Grosse Lage vineyards. If the tasting is important to your travel plans, please check before your visit whether it is offered on your preferred date.
