Palzem: The Moselle, Vineyards and Historic Places
Accommodation in Palzem
Palzem brings together the Moselle landscape, winegrowing and historic places. Palzem and Wehr lie directly on the Moselle and are surrounded by vineyards. When planning your trip, you can choose from several areas of focus: hiking and cycling, wine, or local history. This makes it easy to choose a hotel based on what you most want to experience during your stay.
The Moselle Landscape and Winegrowing
In addition to the Moselle and vineyards, the municipality’s landscape includes forests, meadows and small villages with historic centres. There you can find renovated farmhouses known as Trierer Einhäuser. Some vines grow on steep slopes above the Moselle and must be harvested by hand, a labour-intensive process. Winegrowing is evident both in the landscape and in the work carried out in the vineyards.
Palzem is best known for Elbling, a grape variety that has been grown here since Roman times. You can attend wine tastings at the Carlsfelsen winery, where the local Elbling takes centre stage. Regional specialities are served with the wines on a terrace overlooking the Moselle and the vineyards. Schloss Thorn is also a winery, with a history dating back to the 13th century.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
The Moselsteig trail passes by Palzem’s vineyards. In addition, other well-marked trails cross all the districts of the municipality. These provide two different points of reference when choosing a route: the Moselsteig’s course along the vineyards and a network of trails through the districts.
The Wehrer Rosenberg side trail offers views of the Moselle and Luxembourg. The route starts at the car park by the Wehr stop and leads over a via ferrata along steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces. The trail is not suitable for pushchairs. Check current trail conditions and access arrangements before setting out.
Cycling offers another perspective on the landscape: near Palzem, the Moselle Cycle Route follows gentle vineyard hills and wide bends in the river; Luxembourg lies on the opposite bank. This route description comes from a 2019 guidebook. Check current route conditions before setting off.
Discover History and Culture
The Roman bridge at Palzem dates from the early 1st century and connected Palzem with what is now Stadtbredimus in Luxembourg. On site, you can view its reconstructed appearance in augmented reality using the free ARGO app. This digital reconstruction brings the former connection between the two places to life.
The Bulldog and Agricultural Machinery Museum in Kreuzweiler displays historic machinery and equipment. The museum also explains what farming used to be like. Helfanter Dom is the Church of St Bartholomew; its two massive towers are visible from afar. Alongside the history of the Roman bridge, the programme therefore includes technical and ecclesiastical landmarks of local history.
