Wincheringen – Wine and Architectural History
Accommodation in Wincheringen
Wincheringen combines winegrowing with a townscape shaped by history. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in winemakers and wine tastings or would rather explore the town’s architectural history. Both options offer concrete ways to shape your stay.
Wineries and Wine Tastings in Wincheringen
Weingut Matthias Hild is a fourth-generation family business specialising in Elbling. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the vines are tended without herbicides or insecticides. Wine tastings are also available. This winery brings together a long family tradition and a clear focus on a particular grape variety.
Weingut Michael Backendorf focuses on a long tradition of winegrowing and environmentally friendly cultivation. Wine tastings take place in the tasting room or wine cellar. The winery also explains the different stages of winemaking: from growing and tending the vines in the vineyard to harvesting and processing the grapes, and making the wine in the cellar. Those interested in the journey from vine to finished wine will find a different experience here than at a tasting alone.
The vineyards of Weingut Gries are located in Wincheringen and Nittel, directly on the Moselsteig trail, near large limestone cliffs. The winery offers tastings for groups of 10 to 30 people. A chilled wine vending machine at the winery makes for a quick stop on the Palzem–Nittel stage of the Moselsteig; check the winery’s information before your visit.
Weingut Hermann Schneider offers wine tastings for individuals and groups of up to 70 people. Comparing its group offering with Gries’s can help with planning: individuals are explicitly included here, while Gries specifies a format for groups of 10 to 30 people. Confirm dates and group sizes in advance, as arrangements for visits may vary. The winery produces wine, sparkling wine and brandies on site. Its main vineyard site is Burg Warsberg, where the hillside location and exposure to sunlight create suitable conditions for different grape varieties. Visitors can also enquire about vineyard walks and wine-related events there.
In the wider Upper Moselle region, light-coloured shell-limestone soils are associated with Elbling and Burgundy wines. These wines can be tasted at historic wineries, wine bars and modern winegrowing businesses.
Architectural History and Historic Traces
St. Peter’s Parish Church is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic basilica, built in 1883/84 to plans by Reinhold Wirtz. Another trace of the past lies in archaeology: the so-called grave of the wealthy Treveran woman was discovered in Wincheringen in 1936. Helenenkreuz, a wayside cross dating from 1746 and renewed in 1810, stands on the old Roman road.
The protected historic area around the former moated castle and the cemetery preserves a defensive tower from the 15th century, a manor house from the 16th century and parts of the northern curtain wall. The medieval round defensive tower in Wincheringen is a local landmark and houses the bells of the village church. The cultural spaces in the Warsberger Castle complex open their doors for events.
The townscape also tells the story of Wincheringen’s development. The protected historic area around Im Weissfeld, Trierer Straße, Warsbergerstraße and Weinbergstraße preserves the characteristic street layout on the old eastern edge of the village, as well as the 19th-century expansion, with notable farmsteads. The former mill at Mühlenweg 3 is a building with a half-hipped roof dating from 1789, which was renovated in 1877. Together, these architectural features point to different periods and uses, without any single architectural style defining the townscape on its own.
If you are looking for hotels in Wincheringen, the town’s local themes can help guide your trip planning: would you prefer a stay focused more on wine tastings and winegrowing, or on historic buildings and local history? If you plan to visit the wineries, it is advisable to confirm current dates and arrangements directly.
