Steinborn is located in the Kyllburger Waldeifel on the eastern high terrace of the Kyll; its average elevation is 480 metres. Two perspectives are helpful when planning your trip: the protected village centre with its historic buildings, and the heights associated with Steinborn. In the village centre, the historic district, farmsteads and religious buildings shape the local history; the landscape can be described through several elevation figures.

Village Centre and Architectural History

The historic village centre is a protected historic district that preserves the appearance of a rural village around 1850. It includes surviving farmsteads dating from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. The village centre can therefore be viewed both as a protected ensemble and through its individual buildings and their different dates of construction.

The branch church of St. Hubert is a hall church dating from 1820, with an added sacristy. Its portal was probably reused and bears the date 1747. On the ridge south of Steinborn, the Markus Chapel stands on Lehmweg; it probably dates from the 18th century. Helten Cross stands on the Held: a 2.60-metre-high niche cross that probably dates from the 15th century.

The local history of the chapels also spans widely separated periods: in 1654, Steinborn had three chapels dedicated to St. Hubert, St. Lucy and John the Baptist. The Lourdes grotto dedicated to the Virgin Mary, next to the church, was built by Anna Esch in the 1930s. Together with the church, Markus Chapel and Helten Cross, these places offer different points of reference for the history of the buildings and the village.

Elevation and Landscape

The Held rises to almost 530 metres west of Steinborn. The Eischberge heights in Steinborn Forest reach up to 570 metres; the Witumsberg, associated with Steinborn, is 547 metres high. These figures refer to different points of reference: 480 metres is the average elevation of the village, while the other figures refer to individual rises. This makes it possible to distinguish Steinborn’s elevation from the elevations given for the named hills.

More Cultural Highlights in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm District

The wider travel destination of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district has further cultural highlights to offer. At the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine, one-hour guided tours introduce visitors to ore mining, from geology to applied technology. A mining trail with numerous information panels also presents the area’s mining history. At the Devonium in Waxweiler, complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life are explained in an engaging, hands-on way.

The Westwall Museum is housed across three accessible levels of a bunker and presents a military history exhibition in its underground corridors and rooms. The Rittersdorf moated castle, around 700 years old, offers another perspective on history and architecture. It has remained almost unchanged since it was built and gives an impressive picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture.
