Astert lies within the Kroppacher Schweiz nature and landscape conservation area. There, the Great Nister forms a narrow valley with partly steep slopes. Hiking and cycling offer different ways to experience the landscape: a 15.8-kilometre loop leads into the Nister Valley and reaches Astert; cycling routes connect the village with other routes.

Hiking in the Great Nister Valley

The Kroppacher Schweiz–Limbach “Great Nister Valley” loop is classed as a moderate hike. It covers 15.8 kilometres and has 231 metres of elevation gain; the stated duration is 4.6 hours. This makes it easy to factor the time required for the loop into your day’s plans.

The hike leads through deciduous forests into the Great Nister Valley. The route reaches Astert and then follows the river to just before Heuzert. The loop also climbs Hartenberg to another viewpoint. The return route passes LĂĽtzelauer Mill and the Heunig Caves Trail. This means forest, valley and viewpoints alternate along the tour.

Cycling and other routes

The WW1 cycle route runs south from Limbach to Astert and loops around the Hohe Ley viewpoint. Another tour option is the WW1 Fuchskaute–Hachenburg route: this is a moderate 50-kilometre route. The information on its course and length helps distinguish the routes when planning, without treating them as the same section of trail.

Beyond these tours, the Nister Cycle Route forms part of the Westerwald Loop, running from Wissen through the Kroppacher Schweiz to Hachenburg and onwards into the High Westerwald. Along its route through the Kroppacher Schweiz, steep riverbanks and rocky landscapes shape the trail; climbs lead from the valley to the surrounding high ground. This places cycling within a broader landscape and route context.

The route descriptions also include destinations of cultural and historical interest: one route includes the medieval Assberg slate mine. Another route passes Marienstatt Abbey, whose basilica is Early Gothic. Alongside the landscape, historical sites are also among the routes’ features.

Getting there and planning

To get to the start of the hike, take bus route 270 from Hachenburg to Streithausen. From there, it is about a 25-minute walk to Limbach, where the route begins. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan both the bus journey and the walk that follows.

For the drive, the described route runs from Hachenburg via the K19 through MĂĽschenbach to Astert, then via the K20 to Limbach. As road information can change from time to time, it is advisable to check the route shortly before setting off.

Trails may also be temporarily changed or diverted. Check the latest information on hiking and cycling routes before setting out. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Astert, the different routes can help you plan the focus of your stay.
