Bodenheim: Half-Timbered Houses, Local History and Viticulture
Accommodation in Bodenheim
Bodenheim offers several ways to explore local history and viticulture: historic walking routes, Renaissance buildings and a wine trail through the vineyards. The local history museum also explores the town’s past. When planning your trip, you can choose between architecture, regional winegrowing and outdoor walks.
Historic Buildings and Walking Routes
The 1.6-kilometre historic walking route takes in the 1608 town hall, Breidenbacher Hof and the courtyard of the former Metternich estate. A longer, 4.3-kilometre loop passes through historic farm complexes and by Renaissance half-timbered houses and church buildings. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in the buildings they highlight.
The town hall is an elaborately carved half-timbered building in the Renaissance style. Its details include a carved bay window and decorative Renaissance motifs; the council chamber features stucco. At Breidenbacher Hof, the two-storey Dolleskeller, with its columns and groin vaults, is one of the building’s distinctive features. Knebelscher Hof is considered Bodenheim’s oldest building and was established as an estate in 1606. The walking routes therefore offer a variety of architectural landmarks, from an early 17th-century estate to later buildings such as the manor house of 1774.
A tourist route also leads through the historic town centre. Its signposts draw attention to other historic walks, the wine trail, the RheinTerrassenWeg and cycling routes. The local history museum is housed in an outbuilding of the manor house built in 1774 by Baron von Breidenbach-Büresheim. It features a permanent exhibition on local history and prepares special exhibitions each year. The collection includes prehistoric and medieval ceramics, historic farm objects and fragments of Roman roof tiles. It offers several ways to explore the town’s long history or everyday objects from earlier times.
Wine Trail and Viticulture
The 2.7-kilometre wine trail is a circular route through the vineyards. Signs identifying grape varieties and information panels explain viticulture and the history of Bodenheim. The route also offers views across Bodenheim and the Rhine-Main region. Fourteen wines are presented along the way at the places where they are grown; tastings on site are available during the wine-tasting event. If you plan to take part in a tasting, it is best to check the event dates in advance.
Another distinctive feature of local winegrowing is the Stiftswingert, a vineyard enclosed by imposing walls and corner towers. A statue of Saint Alban stands nearby at the end of the path. The wine trail and Stiftswingert offer different perspectives: the circular route provides information on grape varieties, viticulture and local history, while the walled vineyard site, with its towers, presents a distinctive historical scene.
Cycling Routes and the Wider Region
The Rhine Cycle Route and the Amiche Cycle Route pass right by Bodenheim. The Amiche Cycle Route follows the former Amiche and Valentinchen railway lines and runs from Bodenheim through the foothills of the Rheinhessen hills. You can rent bicycles, mountain bikes and pedelecs at Bodenheim station; check that your preferred rental option is available before you travel.
In the wider Mainz-Bingen destination, the southern part of the district is characterised by the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, specialised fruit and vegetable crops including asparagus, and extensive vineyards producing Rheinhessen wine. The regional trail network includes the approximately 75-kilometre RheinTerrassenWeg from Worms to Mainz. Bodenheim and Oppenheim are stages in the valley that make it easier to access the Rhine Terrace. Along the route, twelve railway stations with regular services also make point-to-point hikes possible. Check current timetables separately when planning your stages.
