Experience Eitelborn
Accommodation in Eitelborn
Specific highlights for a stay in Eitelborn include Sporkenburg, the Burgweg trail, the Wäller Tour Augst and the barbecue hut. If you are looking for a hotel in Eitelborn, deciding on a main focus can help you plan your trip around castle history, hiking or the barbecue hut’s capacity. The following sections give you an overview of these local highlights as well as independent destinations in the Westerwald.
Sporkenburg: Construction history above the Emsbach Valley
Sporkenburg was built in 1310 by Heinrich von Helfenstein above the Emsbach Valley. French troops destroyed the castle during the Thirty Years’ War. Sporkenburg therefore links a specific person and year with a turning point in regional history.
The landscape of the Emsbach Valley
The Emsbach Valley’s landscape is marked by a deeply incised box-shaped valley. It reaches depths of up to 250 metres relative to the surrounding heights, and its valley floor is used predominantly as grassland. The slopes near Kadenbach and Arzbach feature meadows and pastures, as well as areas of dry grassland and orchards. The remaining areas are forested, with broadleaf trees slightly predominating. Local shafts and small spoil heaps in the Emsbach Valley recall the former importance of ore mining. Together, they create a landscape of grassland, open slopes and woodland.
Digital features at Sporkenburg
The digital features described in August 2025 included an augmented reality experience with a virtual castle ghost. An information sign pointed visitors to audio plays and an interactive ghost quiz; audio content could be accessed on site via QR code, without installing an app or registering. These digital features added a storytelling perspective to the experience of the castle. Check locally before your visit to see whether they are still available.
Hiking: Wäller Tour Augst and Burgweg
The moderately difficult Wäller Tour Augst is 14.1 kilometres long, with 381 metres of ascent and 382 metres of descent. Its route reaches the edge of Eitelborn and continues to the accessible ruins of Sporkenburg. Along the way, open terrain with horse paddocks alternates with mixed woodland. The distance and elevation gain provide useful points of reference when planning this hike.
The signposted Burgweg trail to Sporkenburg starts at the eastern edge of Eitelborn, near Erlenweg and the cemetery. As access conditions in the forest can change, check them before setting out. This lets you take the trailhead into account in your plans without confusing it with the Wäller Tour’s route.
A barbecue hut for groups of different sizes
The barbecue hut in Eitelborn can accommodate 40 people indoors and 150 people outdoors. Its facilities include electricity, water and toilets. There is also a covered area and a fire pit outside. If you are planning an event for a group, check the capacity of the relevant area and confirm the booking conditions in advance; this information may change.
More highlights in the Westerwald
The wider Westerwald destination offers other independent ways to experience hiking and the landscape. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and comprises 16 stages. Its overall length differs considerably from the 14.1-kilometre Wäller Tour Augst. Before setting out, check the current route planner for the distance and number of stages.
Another regional highlight is Stöffel-Park: covering around 140 hectares, the site of a former basalt quarry combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the Stöffel mouse, which document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. These attractions are part of the wider Westerwald destination and complement Eitelborn’s local highlights with independent points of interest.
