Heilberscheid: Chapels and Basalt History
Accommodation in Heilberscheid
Heilberscheid lies entirely within Nassau Nature Park, on the heights of the Gelbach Valley. In the village centre, the Heckstein recalls the area’s basalt history: it is a small former quarry. Chapels, memorial sites and trails offer different historical and scenic points of interest. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both notable places connected with the village’s history and outdoor activities.
Chapels and Religious Traditions
The Marienkapelle was built in 1889/1890 and consecrated on 18 August 1890. Services have been held there ever since. The chapel houses a carved wooden Madonna, which was returned to the parish in 2016 and is once again kept there. The construction period, date of consecration and return of the statue tell different chapters of its history and cannot be summed up as a single event.
The Mariengrotte is also connected with a former quarry: it was created in the disused Hettenstein quarry and was consecrated together with its statue in 1954. Every year, a procession makes its way to the grotto on the patronal feast of the Assumption of Mary. Another historical landmark is the wayside cross dating from 1899. It was erected in gratitude for an agreement to hold Sunday winter services in Heilberscheid for three years.
Memorial Sites and Sespenroth
The history of former settlements is kept alive at memorial sites. Since 1984, a wayside cross has commemorated the former settlement of Oberisselbach and its residents. A forest service is held at the abandoned settlement site every year on the first Sunday in September. If you wish to plan your visit around this date, check the exact date before travelling. The former village of Sespenroth is commemorated by a wayside cross and an information board.
An augmented reality experience on the GelbACHTrail near Heilberscheid brings Sespenroth to life virtually and was reported as a new attraction in 2026. Two audio stories add different perspectives: in one, a grandfather explains the village’s difficult circumstances to his grandson. The second tells of a mother encouraging her child below deck on the emigrant ship Leander. The stories give the vanished village a human dimension, while the wayside cross and information board recall its historical context.
Basalt, Trails and Activities
The Hettenstein open-air stage is set in an old quarry. The open-air stage is made of basalt, and a basalt wall has also been exposed there. Basalt is therefore part of the performance venue as well as a feature of the former Heckstein in the village centre. The four marked Nordic walking routes around Heilberscheid range from 4.5 to 14.5 kilometres. They all start and finish at the barbecue hut, making their lengths a useful basis for planning your time.
A shorter option is the Heilberscheid Forest Discovery Trail: the approximately two-kilometre loop is near the barbecue hut and has eleven stations. These include a wooden xylophone, a model charcoal kiln, a barefoot path and an insect hotel. Unlike the Nordic walking routes, the focus here is not on a longer distance but on a series of varied stations. Its approximate length and loop layout help distinguish this activity from the four routes with their specified distances.
Practical Information for Your Stay
The barbecue hut is equipped with a stove and an open fireplace for heating; outdoors, there are barbecues and a fire pit. If you are relying on these facilities when making a booking, confirm their availability in advance. The Dorfschänke Heilberscheid is another local place to go for food and drinks as well as family celebrations. As you should check whether it is currently operating before your trip, confirm its opening status in good time rather than assuming it will be open.
The GelbACHTrail is a nearly 22-kilometre route from Montabaur in the southern Westerwald to Obernhof on the Lahn. In Nassau Nature Park, it offers opportunities to enjoy nature and views, discover art and explore history. The augmented reality experience about Sespenroth is located along this trail near Heilberscheid. This brings the memory of a specific former settlement and a regional hiking trail together in the area, without equating the entire route with the village.
