If you are planning a stay in Niederelbert, the trails differ in more than just length: some pass through built-up areas, while others lead through forests and meadows and to notable natural or historical sites. The hiking options are complemented by the Catholic parish church of St. Joseph and two church events held every year. The village’s location in the Stelzenbach Valley provides a setting for the various routes.

Location and Orientation

Niederelbert lies in the middle and upper Stelzenbach Valley, southeast of the Montabaurer Höhe. The village is also on the road between Montabaur and Bad Ems. These details help you get your bearings before exploring individual trails or the village’s historical themes.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The N1 is 4.3 kilometers long. It passes a water reservoir and then reaches the adjacent forest. Before the trail enters the forest, it offers a view across Niederelbert. The route thus combines a view of the village with a stretch through the forest. In late spring, native orchids may be seen along the N1; the route also passes an orchid meadow where several species grow.

The N2 is four kilometers long, with about two-thirds of the route running through built-up areas and one-third through the municipal forest. A small pedestrian bridge leads to the Wertwiese, described as a former hunting lodge. Compared with the N1, the N2 therefore passes through a larger part of the village and connects this section with a path through the municipal forest.

The nature trail begins on Südstraße. Along its 3.4 kilometers, 20 panels provide information about local plant and animal life. The route is suitable for pushchairs in any weather. Visitors interested in flora and fauna along the way will find a different focus here than on routes whose descriptions emphasize forests, views or historical traces.

The N3 climbs to Hähnchen and offers a view of Niederelbert. Along the way are foundation remains from a former radar station dating to the Second World War; the historical remains may be weathered. The Gickelsweg, in turn, is an approximately eight-kilometer circular hike around Niederelbert. It crosses fields, meadows, forests and small streams, and leads to the Steinkaut viewpoint at a former quarry. When choosing between routes, you can take into account their approximate length, whether they are circular, and the landscape and historical sites described.

The Wäller Tour Elberthöhen

The Wäller Tour Elberthöhen runs from Niederelbert via Welschneudorf and Oberelbert. In good weather, the view may extend as far as the Feldberg. The route thus connects several place names with a possible long-distance view that explicitly depends on the weather. To reach the trail, take bus route 456 from Montabaur ICE station to Niederelbert Rathaus. Check the timetable before travelling, as service information may change.

St. Joseph and Local Traditions

The Catholic parish church of St. Joseph was built in 1910 in the neo-Romanesque style. During restoration, the round arches beneath the organ gallery were restored. The historic baptismal font also returned to its former place, and a coloured glass window was put back into its original opening. These details offer insight into the church’s construction and restoration history without requiring a visit.

The rooster is Niederelbert’s traditional symbol and appears as a heraldic figure on the village coat of arms. The festival calendar is also connected with St. Joseph: the patronal feast is celebrated every year on March 19. The church consecration festival takes place on the second Sunday in September. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates before making arrangements.
