Oberelbert is located in Nassau Nature Park. An extensive network of walking and hiking trails leads through forests, meadows and fields. The species-rich grasslands around the village are considered a habitat for many day-flying butterflies, including light and dark forms of the dusky large blue. For travelers interested in landscapes and habitats, these meadows add to the impressions of forest and field.

Hiking trails and their waypoints

The Wäller Tour Elberthöhen is designated as a moderately difficult hike. It covers 15.8 kilometers, with 285 meters of elevation gain and loss each, and a stated duration of five hours. The route runs from Niederelbert via Welschneudorf and Oberelbert; a short connecting trail leads to Oberelbert. The distance, elevation gain and loss, and stated duration together help you plan the hike.

There are numerous rest areas along the Wäller Tour. The route passes the Forellenhof and continues through the Stelzenbach Valley into the forest. Beyond Oberelbert, the fishponds invite you to stop by the water. When choosing a tour, you can compare the stated distance and duration of the Wäller Tour with the natural and scenic stops along the Apfelstein Trail.

Stops along the Apfelstein Route

The Apfelstein Route passes through the protected Stelzenbach meadows and by the Erbenmühle mill. In the forest-window area, carved sculptures, benches, a forest window and a tree telephone invite you to pause. The route thus features both protected meadows and a purposefully designed stop in the forest.

Below the Rötchen high point, the route reaches the Maria-Hilf wayside shrine. In good weather, the view from there extends as far as the Taunus. Free parking is available at the Stelzenbachhalle starting point.

Small landmarks of cultural history

On the edge of Untershausen, a wayside shrine is adorned with a mosaic Madonna facing St. Margaret’s Church in Holler. A small wayside shrine stands on the old church path from Oberelbert to Holler; it likely dates from the period when Oberelbert belonged to the parish of Holler. The connection between the path and the shrine also makes this stop interesting for travelers who want to notice small traces of culture alongside nature and hiking.

The Westerwald as a wider travel region

The WesterwaldSteig runs through the wider Westerwald travel region. This long-distance hiking trail is 235 kilometers long and has 16 stages. Its length and division into stages clearly distinguish it from the Wäller Tour Elberthöhen.

The Stöffel-Park is also part of the wider Westerwald travel region: this former basalt quarry site, covering around 140 hectares, combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse,” which documents around 25 million years of Earth’s history.

The Keramikmuseum Westerwald, also in the wider Westerwald travel region, is devoted to the history of working with clay. The objects on display generally originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance. Check the workshop program and booking conditions before your trip.
