Pottum and the Wiesensee
Accommodation in Pottum
Pottum and the Wiesensee offer several reasons to visit: water sports, trails around the lake and local culture. The information below highlights specific routes, facilities and cultural points to help you plan your trip.
The Wiesensee and Its Landscape
The Wiesensee covers around 80 hectares and is a defining landmark for Pottum, Stahlhofen am Wiesensee and Winnen. Around 32 hectares of the lake lie within the municipal area of Pottum. The surrounding area is part of the Secker Weiher/Wiesensee landscape conservation area and includes a bird sanctuary. Swimming, sailing and surfing are possible at the Wiesensee.
The lake was first filled for testing in autumn 1969; the present-day Wiesensee was permanently impounded in 1971. These dates mark two distinct steps in the creation of the lake as it exists today.
Walks and Tours
A walk around the Wiesensee takes about an hour. The approximately six-kilometre loop around the lake is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs; check the route conditions before your visit. The Grüner Steig and Seenweg route explores the Wiesensee and its surroundings over about 20 kilometres. This gives you the choice of a named, substantially longer tour as well as the approximately one-hour walk when planning your visit.
Cycling routes include paths around the lake and longer tours through the Westerwald. In the wider Westerwald destination, the WesterwaldSteig long-distance hiking trail runs for 235 kilometres through the region and comprises 16 stages. This is on a different scale from the local paths at the Wiesensee. Before a longer hike, check the stages and route in the current route planner.
A Place to Spend Time by the Water
The Palzhahn sunbathing lawn covers about two hectares. Its facilities include access to the water, a playground, a volleyball net, a kiosk, changing rooms and showers. Check the current availability of individual facilities before your visit.
Church, Architectural History and Theatre
The Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew stands in the centre of the village. Its preserved old tower stands beside the newer church building and parish centre; together, they form a local focal point.
At Hermannsweg 1 stands a listed cultural monument: a partly brick-built and slate-clad house with decorative half-timbering dating from the second half of the 18th century. The theatre at the Wiesensee also attracts audiences from places far beyond Pottum.
Golf and Visitor Information
The Wiesensee golf course complex includes an 18-hole course, a driving range and a 9-hole short course. Check the facility’s current operating status before your visit.
The WällerLand Tourist Information Office at the Wiesensee is located right next to the lake and provides detailed visitor information. Check the opening hours before visiting.
