Accommodation in Westernohe
If you are considering Westernohe as a destination for a hotel stay, its historic village setting and local hiking trails offer concrete ways to shape the focus of your visit.
Village setting and nature in Westernohe
The eastern part of the village was rebuilt to a uniform layout after a fire in 1808. This historical character is still evident in the appearance of the village today. The Wachholderheide nature reserve is also located in the Westernohe area.
Hiking the Eisvogelweg
The approximately 8 km Eisvogelweg can be combined with other local hiking trails. You can plan it as a hike on its own or link it with other local routes; combining routes extends the distance beyond the length of the Eisvogelweg. There is a starting point and parking option at the village square near the church.
More topics in the wider Westerwald destination
The wider Westerwald destination offers additional distinct nature and culture themes. The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometer long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald, with 16 stages. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometers in seven day stages through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points. The routes can be distinguished by their different features: the WesterwaldSteig lists its distance and stages, while the Druidensteig also features river valleys and geo-information points. Before setting out, check the current WesterwaldSteig route planner; the Druidensteig’s interpretive infrastructure may change.
The landscapes also offer distinct highlights. At 657 meters, Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the Westerwald. Holzbach Gorge is a breakthrough valley about one kilometer long, with basalt walls up to 30 meters high; the Westerwälder Seenplatte is a nature area with seven ponds. This means the wider destination offers a range of nature themes: an elevation, a valley and an area with ponds. Another hiking option in the wider Westerwald is the “Weltende” nature trail in the Kroppacher Schweiz. It follows narrow paths and natural trails; some sections are secured with wire ropes. The route also offers views over the Nister valley. Trail conditions and access may vary by season.
At Stöffel Park, industrial heritage, geological history and nature come together across around 140 hectares of a former basalt quarry in the Westerwald. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse.” The fossils document around 25 million years of geological history.
Hachenburg is also among the cultural highlights of the Westerwald: its historic town center is characterized by restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt; the Löwenbrunnen fountain is part of its historic character. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the well-equipped museum workshop, you can get creative yourself under expert guidance. Before visiting the workshop, check the workshop program and booking conditions.
