In the Lebach area, you can choose hiking and cycling routes with different requirements and levels of difficulty. The trails vary in length and stated difficulty, while also focusing on different themes. Geology, cultural history and viewpoints offer further ideas for planning your stay.

Hiking trails by distance and difficulty

The “Through the Middle of Saarland” route is 14 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes approximately four hours. A shorter circular hike is the Kaltensteinpfad dream trail: it covers 8.04 kilometres around the Hoxberg and is also rated moderate. Both trails therefore have the same stated level of difficulty, but differ in length and format.

The Haifischpfad (Shark Trail) covers 3.5 kilometres from the Birkenhof in Lebach-RĂĽmmelbach, passing through deposits of a 290-million-year-old freshwater lake. Compared with the two longer trails, it is considerably shorter. The distances of the three routes range from 3.5 to 8.04 to 14 kilometres; an approximate duration is also given for the 14-kilometre route.

Geology and cultural history along the way

The Haifischpfad is named after the Lebachacanthus shark fossil. Nine information boards along the trail explain the Lebach eggs. Visitors who want to explore the subject further can find an extensive exhibition about them at Lebach Town Hall. It is open to visitors during opening hours, so plan your visit accordingly.

The “Through the Middle of Saarland” route also combines hiking with historical sites: five information boards cover topics in cultural history, and the trail passes parts of a Westwall bunker as well as boundary stones dating from the 18th century. The Kaltensteinpfad, by contrast, passes historical boundary stones from before the French Revolution. The two trails therefore offer different historical points of interest.

The Kaltensteine are a conglomerate rock formation from the Rotliegend, formed approximately 270 million years ago. The Kaltensteinpfad also leads to a viewpoint in the forest, with views over Lebach and towards the Schaumberg. When choosing a route, this means that geological features and viewpoints, as well as distance, can shape the focus of an outing.

Landscape and orientation

Lebach is located in the gently rolling Saar-Nahe Uplands. The Höchsten area near Steinbach includes the highest elevations in the Saarlouis district; Lindenberg in Höchster Wald reaches 460.6 metres. The area around the hiking trails thus offers a range of landscapes and viewpoints, from views over Lebach to the described ridges.

For another way to explore the area, the Prims-Theel adventure trail is considered family-friendly and largely accessible. It is connected to the regional cycling network. If you are comparing cycling and hiking, this trail offers a different focus from the moderate hikes with their stated distances and historical sites.
