Wallerfangen combines cultural history with outdoor activities. The landscape of Wallerfangen and the Saargau includes forests, extensive orchards, rural villages, and distinctive red sandstone and shell limestone formations. It also features historic sites, a farming museum, tours through a Roman mine tunnel, and several named hiking trails.

Cultural history at Haus Saargau and St. Barbara

Haus Saargau is one of the few remaining Lorraine farmhouses in Saarland. The rural museum there brings the way of life of earlier times to life with 18th-century furnishings, farm buildings, and a traditional kitchen garden. Together, these features illustrate the residential, working, and cultivation aspects of rural life.

Limberg was a princely seat during the Hallstatt period. Ramparts and ditches dating from the 6th or 7th century have also been preserved on Limberg. Wallerfangen’s industrial history also goes back a long way: a ceramics factory was founded in 1791 in Vaudrevange, which was then part of France. The Hansenberg inscription is considered the only surviving Latin inscription of its kind north of the Alps.

The Emilianusstollen in the district of St. Barbara can be explored on guided visits; the Roman mine tunnel remains untouched and was used to extract azurite. Dates and booking requirements may change. Check them in advance if you plan to include a tour in your itinerary.

Hiking trails and landscape

Three premium hiking trails are each associated with a district of Wallerfangen: the Hirn-Gallenberg-Tour in Rammelfangen, the Gisinger in Gisingen, and the Grenzblickweg in Leidingen. They are part of the Traumschleifen network in the Saar-HunsrĂĽck premium hiking region. The Vauban-Steig also runs through parts of the municipality of Wallerfangen. The names and locations help you distinguish the hiking routes without implying that their respective courses are the same.

Outdoor swimming pool and other activities

Wallerfangen’s leisure activities include swimming at the sports and outdoor swimming pool, hiking, cycling, golf, camping, tennis, fishing, and model aircraft flying. The outdoor pool has four pools: a diving pool, a sports pool, a non-swimmer pool, and a paddling pool. Pool configuration and operating conditions may change; check the current conditions before visiting.

Saarlouis: fortress history and city life

Saarlouis is a destination in its own right for fortress and urban history. The city was established as a fortress town by Louis XIV in 1680. Part of the former fortifications has been preserved in a local recreation area. The GroĂźer Markt in Saarlouis is now used as a car park and event venue; Vauban Island offers views of the old Saar river channel and the fortress complex. Following extensive renovation and refurbishment work, the Theater am Ring reopened in 2016. The Ludwig Galerie Saarlouis continues the exhibition programme and concept of the former museum in new exhibition spaces.

The Saarlouis weekly market takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the pedestrian zone in front of the Kommandantur and offers, among other things, products from regional producers. Check the current market hours before your visit.
