Weichersbach: Hiking Trails and Mill History
Accommodation in Weichersbach
Weichersbach offers specific ways to plan a trip centered on hiking, cycling, or local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Weichersbach, the planned routes and dates can set the theme for your trip. The local routes vary in length and theme; there is also a nature reserve, historic mills, and recurring festivals.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes
The 6 km Weichersbach Circular Trail is a nature and history trail in the northern part of the village. It starts in the village center on SchulwaldstraĂźe. At 5.3 km, the Green Path is slightly shorter. It is laid out as an agricultural educational trail and is located in the western part of Weichersbach; it also starts in the village center. This lets you distinguish between two local trails by theme: nature and local history on one, agriculture on the other.
A longer circular route is the Three Castles Trail. It starts at Schwarzenfels Castle and forms an approximately 18 km loop through Weichersbach and the surrounding countryside, taking in Steckelsburg Castle ruins and the Ulrich von Hutten Trail. This gives you a choice of routes ranging from the local trails of 5.3 and 6 km to this approximately 18 km tour. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling routes are also part of trip planning: the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2, which is 203 km long in total, passes through Sinntal-Weichersbach between Sinntal-Mottgers and Sinntal-Oberzell. After a gentle descent to Weichersbach, the Sinntal Loop continues uphill to Schwarzenfels Castle and the village of the same name. If you plan to ride this route, check current trail conditions before setting off.
Countryside and Local History
A circular hiking trail runs along the foot of Stoppelsberg. Stoppelsberg is designated as a nature reserve; its landscape includes dense deciduous forest and the distinctive Schlangenritz rock formation. The 126.41 ha “Dry Grasslands near Weichersbach and Other Areas” FFH site includes extensive, extensively managed dry grasslands and fresh meadows on shell-limestone soils. The ecological data used as a basis date from 2019.
One historic landmark along the circular hiking trail is the former KeilmĂĽhle mill. Paper was produced there for more than 400 years, until production ended following a boiler fire in 1983. Another historic mill is the largely preserved and operational Weichersbach BiemĂĽhle, a watermill. The two mills point to different aspects of local history: the long tradition of paper production and the historic use of water power.
A completely renovated vaulted cellar dating from the 14th century is another part of Weichersbach’s history. It is thought to have been the first dwelling and thus the origin of a settlement in Weichersbach. The farming village of Weichersbach also offers a geological hike in the Weichersbach-Mottgers Graben. Check the arrangements in advance if you plan to take this hike.
Festivals and Dates
The annual Kirmes in Weichersbach is a traditional festival day; the fairground-tent Kirmes has been established there since 2010. The traditional Backfisch Festival is also held once a year, at the sports field in Weichersbach. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates in advance.
Church services are held at Weichersbach Church on Sundays and public holidays, alternating with Mottgers and Schwarzenfels. The times rotate between 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00 a.m. Check current service times and arrangements before your visit. This makes it possible to factor both the annual village festivals and the changing service times into your trip planning.
