Gröningen offers several distinct highlights for a stay: the monastery church in Kloster Gröningen, other historic buildings, and routes for cycling and walking. If you are looking for a hotel in Gröningen, you can plan your trip around cultural history, outdoor activities, or a combination of both.

Monastery Church and Visiting Hours

The monastery church in Kloster Gröningen is a three-aisled basilica dating from the early 12th century. Its distinctive features include a rare crossing tower, Romanesque stone sculpture with cushion capitals, and a reproduction of a relief from 1170. The crossing is where the nave and transept intersect; the tower above explains the term “crossing tower” and makes the church’s floor plan easier to understand.

Visits are possible on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00–11:30 and 13:00–16:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 14:00–17:00. Visits on Tuesdays and Sundays are possible by arrangement. Plan around the time slot that suits you, and arrange visits in advance for the two days that require an appointment.

Churches and Architectural History

St Martini features ceiling paintings, ornate galleries, a wooden altarpiece and carved patronage pews from the 17th century. The organ at St Martini was built in 1707. St Cyriaci is a suburban church with a rectangular tower dating from 1320 and an altarpiece with folding wings.

Gröningen’s former castle was converted into a Renaissance residence in the 16th century. A gatehouse dating from 1473 survives at the bridge over the former dry moat. Visitors may only be able to view it from the outside.

In the Börde region

The Western Börde highlights cycling through the Magdeburg Börde, hiking in the Harz foothills and relaxing around Gröningen’s lakes and river landscape as regional activities. The Börde district stretches from the fertile Börde in the south—the largest contiguous area of black earth soil in Germany—to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. In the middle of the district, the landscape is shaped by wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, home to Europe’s largest contiguous lime forest.
