Schönfeld-Weißig offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: castle history, museums and excursions in the Schönfelder Hochland each provide a different focus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Schönfeld-Weißig, you can decide whether you’d rather devote your stay to cultural discoveries or hiking.

Schönfeld Castle: History and Visiting

Schönfeld Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle whose history dates back to a medieval fortified moated castle. Its castle architecture thus meets a much older origin. According to visitor information dated August 2026, tours of the historic rooms are offered from March to November, as well as by personal arrangement.

At the Renaissance castle in Schönfeld, the Cabinet of Magical Arts offers magical experiences without a “protective distance.” Visitor information dated November 2025 describes Schönfeld Castle as accessible and notes that there is an elevator to all floors. If accessibility is important for your plans, confirm access information before your visit.

Museums and Insights into Everyday Life

The Eschdorf School Museum tells the story of the school and preserves memories of school life in the past. The attic museum in St. Barbara’s Church in Eschdorf offers a different glimpse into past ways of life: using historic objects, it recreates a kitchen, washhouse, bedroom and living room. St. Barbara’s Church has a Herbig organ with a case designed by Gottfried Semper and decorated with figures.

The Small Farmers’ Museum preserves a former small farm typical of the Schönfelder Hochland. Its facilities have been kept as they were used up to 1983/84. The furnishings and equipment for living, working, farming and transport make the historic rural culture of home and work tangible: rather than focusing on a single object, the museum highlights how different aspects of life at the time worked together.

Hiking and Cycling in the Schönfelder Hochland

The Schönfelder Hochland is a plateau of approximately 42 square kilometers, with wide-ranging views and numerous hiking trails. Two route descriptions highlight different landmarks: the Schönfeld-Weißig Mountain Trail is a challenging circular hike through the highlands. Another trail leads from the viewpoint bench on Zuckerhut near Malschendorf, across hills and fields, to Triebenberg. The mountain trail is thus described as a loop and as challenging, while the route from Malschendorf is defined by its starting point, scenery and destination.

Triebenberg is 383 meters high and offers views as far as Saxon Switzerland. It is both a named destination on the route from Malschendorf and a viewpoint in the highlands. A cycling tour also passes through the Dresden Heath, the Schönfelder Hochland and the Dresden vineyards; it goes over Triebenberg and through the highland landscape. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.
