Jöhstadt combines the Preßnitztalbahn with a history shaped by mining. There are also extensive hiking opportunities and other outdoor activities. If you’re looking for hotels in Jöhstadt, these highlights can help guide your travel plans.

Preßnitztalbahn and Jöhstadt Station

The Preßnitztalbahn is a narrow-gauge railway with a track gauge of 750 millimeters. This measurement refers to the distance between the rails and specifies the heritage railway’s technical classification. The line runs for around eight kilometers between Steinbach, near Jöhstadt, and Jöhstadt; Schmalzgrube lies along the way. From Steinbach to Schmalzgrube, the railway follows the Preßnitz, then continues to Jöhstadt along the Jöhstädter Schwarzwasser. Schmalzgrube thus marks the transition between the two river sections. Jöhstadt Station is the home station for the locomotives, the railway’s operating base, and the highest station on the Preßnitztalbahn. The heritage railway is considered one of the main attractions in the town.

Mining history and historic buildings

The mining history can also be traced at specific sites. The Andreas-Gegentrum-Stolln is considered one of the main attractions in the town; silver and cobalt were mined there in the 18th and 19th centuries. An old blast furnace in Schmalzgrube is considered part of the UNESCO World Heritage project for the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region. The Schmalzgrube ironworks include a blast furnace built in 1659 and a manor house constructed in 1776. Together, the two buildings are considered evidence of early industrial production of pig iron. Their construction dates are 117 years apart, placing two different periods side by side. St. Salvator Church also has a historic Göthel organ.

In the Erzgebirgskreis, the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. More than 800 years of ore mining have shaped the region. This broader context complements Jöhstadt’s local sites with the Erzgebirge’s long mining history.

Hiking and outdoor activities

Jöhstadt offers numerous opportunities for extended hikes. Local trails and routes are well signposted, with rest areas along the way. An adventure hike leads from Jöhstadt to the Preßnitz drinking-water reservoir, giving your hiking plans a specific destination. If you’d rather focus on something else, you could try climbing at Einsame Spitze, which is considered a sporting challenge. In the Schwarzwasser-Preßnitztal nature experience area, you can also fish at a private pond without a fishing license. For hiking in the Erzgebirgskreis, you can look beyond Jöhstadt’s local trails: the signposted regional network covers around 4,500 kilometers.

For travel planning, rail travel and hiking offer different experiences: the Preßnitztalbahn follows a fixed route, while Jöhstadt offers numerous opportunities for extended hikes. The adventure hike to the Preßnitz drinking-water reservoir adds a specifically named destination to the hiking options. This brings together a clearly defined railway line and a range of possible tours. When comparing hotels in Jöhstadt, you can consider whether the railway or hiking is more important for your stay.
