Scheibenberg combines a distinctive mountain with geological features, hiking trails and a town center whose street grid has been preserved to the present day. Depending on whether you prefer time on the mountain, outdoor activities or historical topics, you can discover different sides of the town.

Mountain and Geology

At 807.2 meters above sea level, Scheibenberg is one of the three basalt mountains in the Ore Mountains. At the summit stand the organ pipes, formed from cooled lava. They are evidence of Cenozoic volcanism; the site has the status of a National Geotope. The mountain’s shape also tells the story of its formation: around 21 million years ago, a lava flow filled a river valley. The more resistant rock remained while the surrounding area eroded more extensively. This reversal of relief created the present-day table mountain. Scheibenberg is also home to a 28-meter-high observation tower.

Hiking Trails on Scheibenberg

The Upper Mountain Loop is three kilometers long, marked in yellow, and passes viewpoints with views in every direction. A hiking route over the summit passes the organ pipes and the ski jumping facility, then continues along the Basalt Nature Trail and the Ottomar Zahm Trail. Along the Basalt Trail, 15 panels explain the geology, the surrounding plant and animal life, and the history of the mountain and the towns of Schlettau and Scheibenberg.

The Basalt Nature Trail starts and ends at the Bergstraße Scheibenberg hiking car park. When planning, it is worth taking local trail markers and conditions into account. This helps you understand the different route descriptions without treating the routes as identical.

Getting There and the Scenic Railway

You can reach the geotope by car via the B101 and Bergstraße, or by bus route 415 between Annaberg-Buchholz, Scheibenberg and Aue. As bus routes can change, check the timetable before your journey. Scheibenberg lies halfway along the Erzgebirge Scenic Railway between Annaberg-Buchholz and Schwarzenberg. Excursion services are seasonal; check the operating days in advance if you would like to include the train in your plans.

Market Square, Church and Mining History

The square market is surrounded by a grid-like street network whose layout has been preserved into modern times. The local history museum is located directly on the market square in a Baroque building dating from 1743. Exhibits include tools and objects from local crafts and trades over the past two centuries. Visits are arranged by appointment.

St. John’s Church combines Late Gothic and Baroque elements. Its furnishings include prayer rooms, a gallery running around the church, and a sequence of carved wooden garlands measuring about 100 meters in total. If you would like to visit the church outside service times, arrange an appointment with the parish office; advance notice may be required for extended visits.

Mining history is also closely connected with Scheibenberg: records of the Maria Magdalena mine date back to 1478; silver veins were discovered in 1515. These dates provide a time frame for the local mining tradition, but do not imply that the mine is accessible today.

Cycling and Regional Cuisine

Starter packages for the Stoneman Miriquidi mountain biking experience are available through partners in Scheibenberg. A short cycling trip leads through the Schlettau Forest to Schlettau Castle. The Bürger- und Berggasthaus serves Ore Mountain cuisine made with fresh regional products; it is worth checking the current menu before your visit.
