Schwarzenberg/Erzgeb.: Castle, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Schwarzenberg/Erzgebirge
Schwarzenberg/Erzgeb. offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: castle and town history, museums, railways and trails with views of the Erzgebirge landscape. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by thinking about which focus you want your stay to have. The sights and routes offer different starting points for your plans.
Castle, Church and Town History
Schwarzenberg Castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the Schwarzwasser River and houses the town museum as well as cultural institutions. The castle park is also part of the historic ensemble and is protected under Saxony's Monument Protection Act. The restored park offers a walk among works of art and views of the castle and town. The castle brings together several aspects: its striking location, its cultural use and the history of the ensemble.
Another architectural highlight is St. George's Church. It was built between 1690 and 1699 and features a freestanding ceiling and Baroque interior furnishings. The period in which it was built and the distinctive features of its interior give the church a character of its own among Schwarzenberg's cultural and historical attractions.
Museums, Crafts and Railways
PERLA CASTRUM traces Schwarzenberg's 875-year history and showcases Erzgebirge woodcarving and bobbin lace. At interactive stations, visitors can touch and try out exhibits. One of the special exhibits is a mechanical trumpeter: only two survive worldwide, and one of them is on display at PERLA CASTRUM. Town history, regional craftsmanship and a rare object come together in this museum.
Herrenhof Erlahammer also has a connection to the region's cultural heritage: it introduces visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage status of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohořà Mining Region. For railway enthusiasts, the Schwarzenberg Railway Museum offers a different focus. Its collection of standard-gauge vehicles is one of the largest in Saxony. A historic train journey between Schwarzenberg and Annaberg-Buchholz aboard the Erzgebirgische Aussichtsbahn offers views of the Erzgebirge landscape.
Forest Stage and Scenic Trails
The Schwarzenberg Forest Stage is a historic open-air theatre built from granite. It was created between 1934 and 1937 on the site of an old quarry and is used as a concert venue. Its elevated location in Rockelmann Park offers views of the Erzgebirge landscape and Schwarzenberg landmarks. The site thus brings together architectural history, concerts and scenic views, without any one aspect needing to take centre stage.
There are various route descriptions for walks and hikes. The 8.75er hiking route leads from the old town via Ottenstein, Totenstein, Galgenberg and the Forest Stage, before returning to the old town. The Schwarzenberg Panorama Trail is a 13.8-kilometre circular hike over the hills around Schwarzenberg; the stated duration is about 4 hours and 5 minutes. This gives you both a route with a clearly described course and a tour with an approximate distance and duration to help with your planning. The restored castle park also offers a walk among works of art and views of the castle and town.
